Top Tips
- Book hotels 21-30 days in advance to secure rates averaging 12-18% lower than last-minute bookings. Prices in major U.S. cities typically peak 7-14 days before arrival, so compare rates early to unlock these savings.
- At check-in, opt to pay in US dollars to avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) fees. Choosing local currency can result in a 3-6% added cost due to less favorable exchange rates. Confirm your currency choice with the front desk staff during payment.
- Accessible, step-free rooms represent only 6-10% of U.S. hotel inventory. For features like roll-in showers or visual alarms, book directly with the hotel and confirm accessibility needs before arrival to ensure availability.
- Total lodging tax in major U.S. cities ranges from 12-18%. This amount may not appear in initial quotes from online agencies, so check the final bill or hotel website for detailed local taxes before booking.
- Major chain loyalty members often receive complimentary Wi-Fi, while 68% of independent hotels charge $15-$15 per day. Enroll in loyalty programs during booking to access free internet.
- Resort fees in cities like Las Vegas, Orlando, and Miami range from $25-$50 per night. On the Las Vegas Strip, 89% of hotels add $35-$50 in fees. Some brands such as Hyatt or Hilton may waive these charges for loyalty members; verify during booking.
- During wildfire season (June-October) in California, Oregon, or Washington, ask hotels about air filtration standards such as MERV-13 or better, which reduce smoke exposure for asthma or allergy needs. Hotels do not routinely publish HVAC details, so call ahead if this is a concern.
- For reliable remote work, business hotels like Courtyard by Marriott or Hyatt House offer 50-100 Mbps dedicated Wi-Fi. Standard hotels average 25-50 Mbps shared, which may slow during busy times. Confirm internet speed and setup before arrival.
- Tipping housekeeping $2-$5 per day in cash, left in a marked envelope, aligns with U.S. custom and is not included in resort fees. Place gratuity daily as staff may rotate.
- In hurricane-prone areas such as Florida and the Gulf Coast, use refundable rates from August to October. Non-refundable bookings are not always honored during state emergencies, and rates can surge 6-12 hours ahead of a storm; check cancellation policies before booking.
- Back-facing hotel rooms in downtown New York or Chicago are typically 8-12 dB quieter than street-facing rooms at night (average 45-50 dB vs. 55-65 dB). If sensitive to noise, request a rear-facing room during reservation.
- Airport hotels within 1 mile of U.S. terminals can reach noise levels over 60 dB during peak hours. Select accommodations at least 2 miles from runways to reduce exposure to noise below 50 dB.
