Top Tips
- Choose PHF (Newport News/Williamsburg) for flights when possible, as it is typically a 30-45 minute drive to Gloucester Courthouse, saving 30-45 minutes compared to RIC (Richmond), which is 60-75 minutes away. Limited flights operate through PHF, so check flight availability before booking.
- Reserve spring hotel nights 4-8 weeks early for the Daffodil Festival in late March or early April, as local B&Bs and inns often fill quickly with limited inventory. Larger chain hotels may have last-minute rooms, but rates usually rise closer to the event.
- If booking a historic inn or B&B, request a ground-floor room or confirm elevator access during your reservation, as many properties have limited or no elevator service. Ask about step-free access, ramps, or visual alarms if you have accessibility needs.
- Boaters should contact hotels and marinas in advance to confirm boat-trailer parking, since most Gloucester hotels and motels lack dedicated trailer spaces. Marinas at Gloucester Point can handle boat launches, and some hotels may partner with marinas or maintain trailer-friendly lots.
- Gloucester restaurants have limited midweek evening hours outside summer; confirm hours and make dinner reservations, especially Monday through Wednesday, to avoid long drives to other towns. Check if your hotel offers onsite dining or room service as a backup.
- Gloucester County municipal tap water is potable and meets Virginia testing standards, helping most travelers avoid the need for bottled water. Tap water is safe for children; individuals with specific health concerns should ask the hotel for more information.
- Free surface parking is common at I-shell/US-17 motel clusters, while downtown Courthouse areas and small inns offer tighter parking. Call ahead to confirm on-site parking, ADA-accessible spaces, or charging stations for electric vehicles if required.
- Rent a car for your visit, as public transit is limited and taxi/Uber coverage is sparse in Gloucester. Most major hotel chains offer free parking and can help guests arrange car rentals or provide maps for rural routes.
