Top Tips
- Book at least 21-30 days in advance to save 12-18% on non-event weekends in Lakewood, as rates typically jump 15% for last-minute reservations. Early booking gives you more room options and better rates. Set up price alerts on hotel sites to catch advance discounts.
- Ohio’s combined lodging tax for Lakewood hotels totals 15.5% (state 7.5%, local 8%), with no city-level exemptions or waivers. Review your bill to verify the correct tax is applied, as taxes are typically itemized on your reservation confirmation.
- Hotels on Superior Road place you a 5-12 minute walk from Lakewood Park, the Arts Center, and Detroit Avenue dining. Consider properties in this area to maximize walkable access to local culture and restaurants.
- If working remotely, confirm Wi-Fi speeds directly with your hotel. Mid-tier options average 45-65 Mbps, but older independent properties may fall below 35 Mbps. Check if complimentary business amenities or co-working spaces are available nearby.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) and pay in USD if using a foreign card to avoid a 3-5% surcharge at checkout. Review receipts to confirm the billed currency before completing payment.
- Request step-free or accessible room access if needed, as only 40% of hotels built before 1950 have elevators and 62% of pre-1960 rooms lack ADA compliance. Notify properties in advance for accessible features or aids.
- During events on Main Street, hotel prices can surge by 30-45%. For mid-tier rooms at $130-$160 (potentially $180-$240 during festivals), book at least 60 days in advance to ensure availability. Check city event calendars to plan around local festivities.
- Use Huntington or KeyBank ATMs for lower withdrawal fees. Detroit Avenue’s non-network machines charge $3.50-$5.00, while Huntington branches charge $2.50 per transaction. Many hotels can provide directions to nearby ATMs.
- Housekeeping gratuity in Ohio is typically $2-$5 per night, left daily in an envelope. Providing tips each day ensures the staff on shift is recognized. Front desk staff can provide envelopes or advice on tipping.
- For quieter stays near Detroit Avenue, request an east-facing room or one north of Clifton Blvd, where traffic noise is 10-15 dB lower (night averages 65-75 dB). Hotels can often honor room location requests if contacted before arrival.
- Lakewood tap water contains 0.8-1.2 mg/L free chlorine and is safe to drink. Bring a refillable bottle, as most hotels don’t supply complimentary bottled water. Ask reception about water filling stations if available.
- Combine chain loyalty points with Ohio’s 3% lodging tax discount for guests aged 65+ for additional savings. Present ID at check-in to confirm eligibility. Consider joining free loyalty programs in advance to stack points and discounts.
