Top Tips
- Book your hotel at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead to secure standard rates and availability, especially during University of Maryland events. Rates for mid-range hotels can increase 30-50% during graduation weekends (mid-May) or home football games. Flexible cancellation policies are helpful in case event schedules change.
- Choose a hotel within 0.5 miles (800 meters) of campus to minimize transit delays when visiting the University of Maryland. For easy access to Washington, D.C., select a property near the College Park–University of Maryland Metro station (Green Line) for a 20 to 30 minute ride to Gallery Place. If walking is not practical, check for hotel shuttles.
- Verify your hotel's parking rates—most charge $15 to $25 per night—and ask about shuttle schedules to the Metro or BWI. Shuttle frequency may be limited after peak hours or during high-demand events, so confirm late arrival options and check for possible parking restrictions around campus events.
- Request a room on a higher floor, facing away from the airport runways or Route 1, to limit noise from flights and campus nightlife. This is especially important on Friday and Saturday nights when local venues are busiest.
- Have a valid photo ID and the credit card used for booking available at check-in; international guests should show a passport. Most hotels place a credit card hold for incidentals, usually $50 to $100 per stay. Inform the front desk if you want to pay with a different card.
- Total taxes in College Park typically add 13-14% to the advertised nightly rate, including state and city occupancy taxes. Always ask for an itemized breakdown of all taxes and fees, such as resort and parking fees, before confirming your booking.
- Most College Park hotels provide Wi-Fi speeds between 25-100 Mbps and 24-hour business centers. If you require a private workspace or meeting room, check about advance reservations to ensure availability.
- Tipping is a standard U.S. practice: leave $2 to $5 per night for housekeeping, $1 to $2 per bag for bell staff, and add 15-20% for room service, which sometimes includes an automatic service charge.
- Metro Green Line trains depart every 6-12 minutes during peak periods, with rides to Washington, D.C. costing $2.00 to $6.00 each way, depending on the time. Use rideshare services for local trips to avoid heavy Beltway traffic from 7-9 am and 4-6 pm weekdays.
- Current Purple Line and road construction near campus may add 10-15 minutes to local drives or shuttle trips, particularly on Campus Drive and Baltimore Ave during weekday mornings. Check hotel updates or use local apps like Waze for real-time routes.
- Confirm accessible accommodations when booking by asking about fully accessible rooms with step-free entry, roll-in showers, and visual alarms. For families, request connecting rooms, microwaves, or cribs in advance, as availability is limited.
- Explore the College Park Aviation Museum, just a 3-minute walk from many airport hotels. The museum features hands-on exhibits suitable for all ages; allow 1 to 2 hours for your visit.
- Compare rates across the hotel website, Priceline, and direct channels, and look for 5-10% savings with AAA, AARP, or University of Maryland-affiliated discounts. Bring valid ID to receive the rate at check-in.
- Maryland permits adult-use cannabis, but most hotels ban smoking (including cannabis and tobacco) in rooms and common areas—violations can result in a $200 or higher cleaning fee. For campus events, business casual attire is standard.
