Top Tips
- Book 3-9 months in advance for major Texas events like SXSW (Austin, March) or the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo (March), as hotel rates often spike 50-300% and sell out. Check event calendars and secure your booking early to avoid sold-out dates, and consider flexible dates or refundable rates if your plans are uncertain.
- Choose your airport based on door-to-door travel time, not just airfare. In Dallas, Love Field is 10-20 minutes (6-8 miles) from downtown, while DFW Airport is 25-40 minutes (24-28 miles) away. Check if your hotel offers shuttle service, especially when booking with major chains.
- Downtown hotel parking in Dallas, Austin, and Houston typically costs $20-$50 per day, while suburban hotels are more likely to offer free parking. Confirm in advance if complimentary parking or valet services are available through hotel loyalty programs.
- Select refundable rates for Gulf Coast hotels during hurricane season (June-November) in Houston, Galveston, and Corpus Christi to reduce cancellation risk. Review hotel cancellation policies and consider travel insurance during this period.
- At summer check-in, ensure the air conditioning performs effectively; inland daytime highs in June-August typically reach 95-100°F (35-38°C). Ask about 24-hour maintenance or guest request options for prompt climate adjustments if needed.
- Ask about hotel backup power and EV charging during extreme-weather season, as Texas grid stress can occur. Prioritize larger chain or downtown hotels that advertise backup power, and mention any specific needs such as medical devices or refrigerated medication at booking.
- Wi-Fi connectivity is often weaker outside Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio, with hotel reviews frequently noting speeds below 25 Mbps. Confirm expected Wi-Fi speeds with your hotel before arrival or look for business-friendly amenities if reliable internet is essential.
- Event egress traffic can significantly slow down departure after major events. Staying within 1-2 miles (up to 3 km) walking distance of venues like AT&T Stadium or Circuit of the Americas can cut post-event transit time in half. If accessibility is important, check for sidewalk or step-free routes and confirm late check-out availability if needed.
- Resort, destination, or amenity fees can range from $8-$40 per night at boutique and downtown hotels. Always compare the total price on your booking site, and confirm at check-in which amenities (such as gym access, breakfast, or Wi-Fi) are included in the fee.
- Do not assume water is potable in smaller towns; confirm with the hotel front desk or check the county public health website before drinking, as boil water advisories may occur. Request complimentary bottled water if available—many major brands offer this in affected areas.
- Most Texas hotels charge pet fees of $20-$75 per night and set limits on the number or weight of animals. Check pet policies when booking, and ask about on-site pet amenities such as designated walking areas or nearby parks.
