The price fit our budget. It was located in a unique spot near Volcano National Park and some nice rural towns with unique shops. Owner made some nice suggestions of local places to stop for breakfast and coffee.
Price. Did not consider this to be a resort, Pricr, this is a Bed & Breakfast home, with a few rooms in an aoutbuilding.Enjoyed breakfast on the deck, overlooking the grounds.

Top Tips
- Book Kamuela hotels 3 to 6 months in advance for winter high season (December to April) to access savings of 20% to 40% compared to last-minute rates. Verify cancellation policies, as flexibility may be reduced on promotional fares.
- Factor in Hawaii’s combined hotel taxes and fees, as these add 13% to 17% to nightly rates. Larger hotels may charge an additional $15 to $50 per night as a resort fee; confirm all inclusions at checkout to avoid surprises.
- Staying in Kamuela (Waimea) typically costs 15% to 25% less than Kohala Coast resorts, with hotels averaging $150 to $250 per night. Compare nightly rates by area before booking.
- Expect Wi-Fi speeds of 25 to 50 Mbps at most Kamuela hotels, but rural outages can occur during Kona storms (November to March). Travelers working remotely should consider a backup hotspot for reliability.
- Only 40% to 60% of Kamuela hotels are equipped with ADA-compliant ramps due to historical ranch-style buildings. Request step-free or accessible room access before arrival to ensure your needs are met.
- Evenings in Kamuela, at 2,500 to 3,000 feet elevation, can cool to 50°F to 60°F (10°C to 15.5°C). Pack a layered wardrobe to stay comfortable when outdoor dining or exploring.
- Kamuela is 45 to 60 minutes by car from Kona International Airport (KOA), and public transit is limited. Reserve a rental car in advance for flexibility, especially during high season.
- Use ATMs at local banks such as First Hawaiian Bank to avoid 2% to 3% foreign transaction fees, saving $5 to $15 per withdrawal over resort-based machines.
- Many Kamuela B&Bs and historic ranch houses feature stairs and narrow corridors. Confirm your property's step-free or accessible room options if mobility is a concern.
- Save on meals by purchasing groceries locally and visiting Waimea’s weekly farmers markets or Parker Ranch for fresh local produce. Ask hotel staff for the nearest market schedule.
- Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen and use sun protection year-round. Strong UV exposure is typical even at Kamuela’s elevation and is reflected by sand or water.
- Reserve accommodations 90 to 120 days ahead to access rates 15% to 30% lower than last-minute bookings during peak season (December to April). Rates often jump inside 60 days before arrival.
- Opt for mid-week check-ins (Tuesday or Wednesday), which may reduce rental car and hotel rates by 10% to 20% versus weekend arrivals.
- Bring cash to Waimea Farmers Market, as about 30% of vendors are cash-only. Paying by card may add a 5% to 8% dynamic currency conversion fee for international visitors.
- Ask for a filtered water dispenser at your lodging. Kamuela’s municipal tap is treated with chloramine, which some guests find distasteful.
- Acclimatize at Kamuela’s 2,600-foot elevation for at least 6 hours before visiting Mauna Kea’s summit (above 9,000 feet) to reduce altitude sickness risk, which affects roughly 1 in 4 unacclimated travelers.
- Explore sustainable stays: 7 out of 14 certified eco-lodges (ENERGY STAR or DLNR) operate in Waimea and follow Hawaii state conservation standards. Check for eco-certifications when booking.
- North Kohala rural properties may have weak cell service (1 to 2 bars). Prioritize rentals offering Wi-Fi if consistent connectivity or remote work is essential.
- Rates can surge 30% to 45% during the Waimea Town Art Fair in February. To avoid price increases, schedule your trip outside major event weeks.
- Waimea’s high Koa pollen and vog (volcanic smog) may affect guests with allergies or respiratory conditions. Request allergen information or rooms with enhanced air filtration in advance.
