Top Tips
- Book 4 to 8 weeks ahead for Chattanooga hotels during peak season (summer, fall, or major events like Riverbend or Ironman), as high demand increases rates and reduces availability. Rates may increase by 20% or more during these dates.
- Select your hotel based on your itinerary. Downtown and Riverfront areas feature major brands like Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatt, offering walkability to attractions such as the Tennessee Aquarium and easy access to dining and events. Lovell Field hotels are ideal for early flights, located about a 15 to 20 minute drive from downtown.
- Confirm the total cost, including any daily parking fees and the local occupancy tax (about 15% of your room rate), before booking to avoid unexpected charges. Expect daily parking fees to range from $15 to $24 in the central district.
- Verify if your chosen hotel offers a complimentary airport shuttle from Lovell Field (CHA) when booking, as this can simplify arrival and departure, typically a 10 to 20 minute ride to central downtown. Contact the hotel 24 hours ahead to confirm shuttle hours, as some services pause after 22:00.
- Consult recent guest reviews (from the last 6 to 12 months) on platforms like TripAdvisor, specifically looking for comments on Wi-Fi speed (10 Mbps or higher for video calls), aircraft noise after 22:00, and on-site parking availability.
- Leverage the front desk or concierge for local insights on safe walking routes, optimal times to visit attractions like Lookout Mountain, and authentic restaurant recommendations. Ask about accessible routes and venues for all mobility needs, including ramps and step-free access.
- Request specific room preferences such as a river or mountain view, a high floor, or a quieter side when booking or at check-in; fees may apply for early check-in or late check-out. If you need an accessible room (step-free shower, visual alarms), request upon booking as availability is limited.
- Adhere to U.S. tipping customs: expect to tip bellhops $1 to $2 USD per bag and housekeepers $2 to $5 USD per night. For restaurant and room service, a 15% to 20% tip is standard for good service. Tips are customarily left in cash or charged to your room bill; check local hotel guidelines for pooled versus individual tipping.
- Secure valuables using in-room safes or the front desk safe, and exercise general urban precautions at night by sticking to well-lit areas or using rideshares, as advised by hotel staff. Most midscale and upscale Chattanooga hotels offer in-room safes; for larger items, the front desk can secure valuables.
- Confirm the quality of Wi-Fi for reliable internet access, especially if traveling for work, and ask about business services like printing or meeting rooms, as some hotels may charge for premium speeds. Premium Wi-Fi may cost $5 to $10 per day if high-speed is needed for streaming or uploads.
- Inquire about on-site parking costs, availability of EV chargers, and specific pet policies including fees and size restrictions if you plan to drive or bring a pet. Accessible parking spots and pet relief areas are standard at major brands - confirm specific location availability before arrival.
- Confirm breakfast and meal options, noting many hotels offer either complimentary or paid breakfast. Sample southern dishes like biscuits and gravy or fried green tomatoes at popular eateries within 500 m, including Blue Plate or Maple Street Biscuit Company.
- If traveling with family, ask about connecting rooms, cribs, and pool hours. For business, confirm amenities such as a comfortable workspace and dry-cleaning services. Pool access and workspace availability can vary by property and season; request early to guarantee availability.
- Be aware that Lovell Field (CHA) is served mostly by regional jets, so confirm baggage allowances and gate information with your airline before departure to avoid surprises. Many flights operate on aircraft with lower baggage weight limits - check your airline app or website prior to packing.
- Present government-issued photo identification and a credit card for incidentals upon check-in, as most U.S. hotels require a hold on a card even if paying cash for the room. International guests should present a valid passport; some hotels pre-authorize up to $100 for incidentals.
- Explore Chattanooga's public transportation options such as the CARTA bus system by downloading their app or asking the hotel front desk for route and schedule details. CARTA downtown shuttles typically run every 15 minutes from 6:00 to 23:00.
- Pack for variable weather, as Chattanooga experiences humid summers (up to 90°F / 32°C) and occasional storms. Indoor pools and fitness centers at most major hotels offer alternatives during storms or high heat.
- Arrange local experiences such as tours to Lookout Mountain attractions like Ruby Falls or Rock City directly through your hotel, which can sometimes offer faster or discounted bookings. Request accessible transport for Rock City or Ruby Falls if needed; hotel staff can coordinate details with tour operators.
