This was probably the best hotel I've ever stayed at for the price/star-rating. It was eclectic. The staff was FANTASTIC. The rooms were fun (who can say that about a hotel). Each room had a different display and it was like stepping back in time

10

Conveniently located close to two large malls (including a Walmart), bus station close by with many scheduled stops directly to downtown and several restaurants nearby. The hotel restaurant is also very good.

10

Fun hotel with a funky 70s vibe. We loved "Granny's basement". It's nice that they had a pool table and a fun place to hang out. In the lobby I listened to some old vinyl on a turntable, and they had a lot of games, so we hung out and played games.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are typical hotel check-in and check-out times in Victoria?

Most hotels in Victoria, including chain and downtown locations, set check-in at 3:00 PM and check-out between 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Extending your stay may result in late check-out fees or day-rate charges, so confirm with the front desk.

What taxes and mandatory lodging fees will I see on a Victoria hotel bill?

Expect a 5% federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) and a 3% Municipal and Regional District Tax (MRDT) on eligible accommodations in Greater Victoria. Some properties may also add provincial taxes on services or local municipal levies, with total additions usually ranging from 8% to 12% of the room rate. Always review the rate breakdown when booking.

How much do nightly hotel prices swing between low and peak season in Victoria?

Hotel rates in Victoria are lowest in January and February and peak in July and August. Mid-range hotels commonly raise summer rates by 40% to 80% from winter lows, with pricing most affected by property class and proximity to the Inner Harbour.

Which Victoria neighborhoods should I compare for hotels based on price, walkability, transit, and noise?

Downtown and the Inner Harbour have the highest hotel density and excellent walkability to attractions, but rates are often 10%-40% above the city average and noise increases during events such as July festivals. James Bay and Fairfield, a 5 to 20 minute walk from downtown, typically offer rates 5%-20% below downtown and more peaceful evenings. Oak Bay, about 4 to 6 km east (a 10-20 minute drive), has fewer large hotels and more B&Bs or boutique properties, often at higher nightly rates. Vic West and Songhees, across the harbor (5-15 minute drive or 15-30 minute walk), have growing hotel options plus good bike and ferry access.

How available and regulated are short-term rentals (Airbnb) in Victoria, and how does that affect hotels?

Victoria enforces short-term rental licensing, reducing the number of listings since 2020 and supporting hotel occupancy during busy months. Supply disruptions may occur during licensing enforcement or major events, so check a property's license status before booking.

Are hotels in Victoria generally pet-friendly, and what fees should I expect?

Many Victoria hotels offer pet-friendly rooms, but not all do. Typical pet fees range from approximately $15–$37 USD (C$20–C$50) per night, usually as a non-refundable cleaning fee; actual CAD charges depend on current rates, so verify before booking. Some hotels have size, breed, or per-stay limits. Under Canadian law, documented service animals are exempt from standard pet fees.

What are the payment, deposit, and currency norms for Victoria hotels?

Major Victoria hotels accept international credit and debit cards. Expect a pre-authorization or deposit on arrival, usually between $37–$148 USD (C$50–C$200) per stay for incidentals. Some hotels offer dynamic currency conversion (DCC) at checkout - to avoid conversion fees, request final billing in CAD. Cash is rarely accepted for deposits.

Is Victoria practical for remote work from a hotel, considering Wi-Fi, coworking options, and power reliability?

Victoria has high power reliability, and downtown hotels commonly advertise Wi-Fi with speeds for video meetings, typically 20-200 Mbps. Coworking spaces such as The Network Hub offer day passes from around C$20–C$40 (approx. $15–$30 USD), located 5-15 minutes' walk from most downtown hotels. Verify up-to-date rates and room quiet policies with your hotel if remote work is a priority.

Are there any safety or lodging-specific scams or enforcement issues travelers should watch for in Victoria?

Two local issues to note: (1) Victoria fines and removes unlicensed short-term rental operators, so reserve licensed accommodations to avoid cancellations. (2) In the Inner Harbour and Lochside areas, petty theft and bag-snatching reports increase in tourist seasons. Use hotel safes for valuables.

Are accessibility features common in Victoria hotels, such as step-free access, roll-in showers, and lifts?

Larger and newer Victoria hotels often provide accessible rooms with step-free entry and compliant bathrooms. Many older or heritage properties may lack step-free arrival or roll-in showers. If specific accessibility needs are essential, confirm with the hotel's official accessibility statement or consult Accessible Tourism BC resources before booking.

Top Tips

  • Reserve 3-6 months in advance for summer visits to avoid 25-40% rate increases from May to September. Waterfront view rooms fill quickest, so early reservations secure both limited views and better rates.
  • Expect 13-15% in taxes and fees per night: 5% GST and 8% PST apply, and some downtown hotels charge a 2% municipal fee, adding $15 to $50 CAD (approx. $11 to $37 USD) nightly. Review final pricing to avoid surprises at checkout.
  • Stay in downtown Victoria for enhanced safety, with crime rates 20-30% lower than outer suburbs like Saanich. Most attractions and waterfront paths are within a 5-10 minute walk.
  • Confirm Wi-Fi speed before arrival if planning to work remotely; most hotels offer 50-100 Mbps. Be aware speeds may drop by 20-30% during the busy summer season.
  • Request accessible features proactively. About 70-80% of hotels offer step-free access and elevators, but heritage buildings may require you to specify needs like widened doorways in advance.
  • Opt for Green Key-certified hotels to support sustainable tourism. Currently, 40-50% of Victoria’s eco-focused hotels hold this certification and implement water- and energy-saving measures.
  • Plan to spend $15 to $40 CAD (approx. $11 to $30 USD) per night for hotel parking in downtown Victoria. Free street parking is limited to short time windows - using hotel lots is more reliable.
  • Coordinate arrival times with Swartz Bay ferry schedules. Ferry trips from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay take roughly 1.5 hours, followed by a 30-40 minute drive to downtown hotels.
  • For the fastest city transfer, choose Victoria International Airport (YYJ) - a 24 km trip takes about 25-30 minutes by taxi or shuttle to downtown, which is shorter than the ferry route.
  • Victoria's tap water meets Canadian health standards. Bring a reusable bottle to reduce plastic waste and avoid minibar charges for bottled water.
  • Pack a lightweight waterproof layer for visits from October to April, when the city receives most of its 650 mm annual rainfall. July and August are much drier.
  • Request accessible rooms 7-14 days in advance for heritage hotels, as many central properties have limited accessible units due to building age.
  • Follow Canadian tipping standards: 15-20% for restaurant and hotel service staff. Most hotels accept chip or tap cards in CAD - decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) if prompted.
  • Choose hotels within 1.5 km (up to a 20-minute walk) of the Inner Harbour for quick access to the BC Legislature, ferry terminals, and major attractions.
