Top Tips
- Book hotels 30-90 days ahead for summer weekends and major events like Norfolk Harborfest (mid to late June), Navy port visits, the Virginia Arts Festival, and local graduation periods to secure availability and avoid higher rates from concentrated leisure and military travel. Most major hotel chains in Norfolk, including Hilton, Marriott, and IHG, offer loyalty program discounts for advance bookings. Confirm flexible cancellation policies during peak periods, and consider bundled options—such as hotel plus parking or breakfast—to help manage your budget.
- Allow 15-25 minutes travel time from Norfolk International Airport (ORF) to downtown by car. Rideshare and taxi fares are typically $15 to $30 USD one-way during off-peak hours; check with your hotel about complimentary airport shuttle service, which is offered by several leading chains. Traffic congestion may increase during cruise embarkation days or major Norfolk Naval Station events, so confirm your estimated arrival time if traveling during peak periods.
- Daily hotel parking rates in downtown Norfolk commonly range from $20 to $35 USD, varying by property and valet or self-park options. Major brands sometimes offer weekend or loyalty member packages with parking included, and public garages like MacArthur Center occasionally provide overnight or discounted rates—check with your hotel for the latest options. Ask if your property includes in/out privileges, access to nearby public garages, or an airport shuttle that could offset parking costs.
- Select your hotel neighborhood based on walkability or car needs: Ghent (0.5–1 mile west of downtown) is walkable for dining, Waterside/downtown provides access to harbor attractions and cruises, and Ocean View is a 10–15 minute drive east for direct beach access. National hotel chains are located in each area, letting you use points or elite status benefits regardless of your preferred neighborhood. To tailor your choice, check the hotel's map view or contact the concierge for recommendations based on your planned activities.
- Hampton Roads Transit’s Tide light rail and bus network enables efficient downtown travel, especially when parking is limited or costly. Many major attractions, including Nauticus and MacArthur Center, are accessible via The Tide. Ask the front desk about day passes or transit cards, which are often available at full-service hotels, and verify last train or bus times at gohrt.com when planning late evening returns.
- Norfolk summers are hot and humid, with daily highs in the mid-80s to low-90s °F. Hurricane season runs from June to November, so check weather forecasts and hotel cancellation policies early, particularly for flexible or refundable rates. Pack light, moisture-wicking clothing, and review whether your hotel offers complimentary laundry facilities for convenience during extended summer stays—top chains typically post emergency procedures for weather events at check-in and in guest rooms.
- For visits to Naval Station Norfolk, choose accommodations within 1-3 miles of the base to minimize travel time and traffic congestion. Many top hotel chains are familiar with Navy guest needs and may offer military family rates or special amenities on request. Verify base visitor pass requirements ahead of arrival—some hotels provide reference letters or information sheets to support the access process, and policies may change.
- Older or boutique hotels in Norfolk may have limited elevator or accessible room availability, so always request specific accessibility features such as rollaway beds, visual alarms, roll-in showers, or ramp access when booking. Ask for a verified accessible room with a confirmation number, as same-day room changes are not always possible. Major hotel chains are generally ADA-compliant and offer booking filters for accessible features.
