Top Tips
- Book at least 4 to 8 weeks in advance when visiting during major Winnipeg events, such as Festival du Voyageur (February), Folklorama (August), or during Winnipeg Jets home games. Hotels near James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (YWG) and downtown typically reach peak occupancy during these times, so early booking secures access to preferred locations and rates.
- Compare your total price, including Manitoba’s 5% GST and 7% PST, plus any additional accommodation, destination, or parking fees. Top hotels near the airport often show pre-tax rates first; review your itemized checkout price to avoid surprises.
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and a major credit card for check-in, as required by most Canadian hotels. Minimum check-in age is typically 18, and a temporary hold is placed on your card for incidentals. International guests should present a passport. If you are unsure about accepted cards or hold amounts, contact the property directly.
- Hotels within 5 to 10 km of YWG usually offer complimentary or paid shuttle services with set schedules, especially during peak flight times. Confirm shuttle availability and timing before you arrive. For self-parking, inquire about covered or indoor options, as winter temperatures can drop to -20°C (-4°F) or lower.
- Reduce noise and seasonal discomfort by requesting a room away from elevators, ice machines, and exterior doors. In winter, ask for extra blankets and confirm that the heating system is working. In summer, check for functioning air conditioning and blackout curtains, as some older properties may have variable cooling.
- Follow standard Canadian tipping practices: tip 15 to 20% at sit-down restaurants and taxis, $1 to $2 CAD per bag for bell staff, and $2 to $7 CAD per night for housekeeping. Most Winnipeg hotels enforce quiet hours from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM; respect these for guest comfort.
- Downtown Winnipeg is 7 to 10 km (15 to 25 minutes by car) from the airport. Taxis cost about $25 to $35 CAD each way; rideshare apps like Uber operate at YWG, and Winnipeg Transit buses connect to major routes. Ask your hotel for the latest transit schedules or accessibility details, especially if step-free access is needed.
- Hotel front desk teams and concierges are valuable sources for local recommendations—ask about Winnipeg’s Ukrainian, Métis, or Indigenous food, as well as art venues and seasonal festivals. Leading hotels can help book tours for sites such as The Forks Market or the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
- Use the in-room safe for passports, excess cash, and electronics. While areas like The Forks and Exchange District are generally safe and busy during daylight, ask at the front desk about recommended evening walking routes or local taxi contacts for night travel. Consider a room on a higher, well-lit floor near the elevator for added security.
- Families can request amenities such as connecting rooms, cribs, and in-room fridges or microwaves at chain hotels; check pool hours in advance, as policies vary. Solo travelers may prefer higher floors near elevators and security features like deadbolts and peepholes. Business travelers should confirm high-speed Wi-Fi and request an itemized invoice for expense needs.
- Many airport-area hotels offer pet-friendly rooms for an added fee, but advance reservation is recommended due to limited availability. Smoking and cannabis use are not allowed indoors at major hotels; use designated outdoor areas to avoid fines.
- Boost value by joining hotel loyalty programs to earn points or qualify for upgrades and perks. Look for package deals—many Winnipeg airport hotels offer specials like park-and-fly rates or event bundles, with potential savings compared to booking services separately.
