Top Tips
- Book 3-6 months in advance for major events like the Iowa State Fair in August to avoid typical rate increases of 30-50%. Early booking can secure nightly rates around $120-$180 USD instead of $200 or more.
- Choose centrally located hotels in Clive, about a 15-minute drive to Des Moines International Airport (DSM). These locations provide a quieter environment compared to properties adjacent to the airport, where air traffic noise can be noticeable.
- Verify that free parking is included before booking; most hotels in Clive offer complimentary parking, while some downtown-area properties may charge $15-$25 USD per night.
- Business travelers can often secure 10-15% discounts at Marriott and Hilton hotels in Clive using corporate codes, reflecting the area’s high volume of corporate stays.
- Request a ground-floor room or accessible room in advance if mobility is a concern, as some older Clive hotels may lack elevators.
- Bring a reusable water bottle. Clive’s tap water meets safety standards, but some guests notice a slight sulfur taste due to local minerals. Filtered water stations are available in many mid-range and up hotels.
- Pay in USD at checkout to avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) fees, which can add 3-5% to card transactions, particularly at hotels near corporate centers.
- Earn 2x loyalty points per $1 spent at Kum & Go gas stations on extended stays through partner hotel programs in the Clive area.
- Confirm Wi-Fi speeds before booking if you plan to work remotely; Clive hotels offer speeds from 10-50 Mbps, with some, like Courtyard by Marriott, providing 30+ Mbps.
- If you have allergies, request an allergen-friendly or hypoallergenic room during booking. Several hotels in Clive, such as Residence Inn, offer rooms with HEPA filters to manage humidity-related allergens common in Iowa.
