Top Tips
- Book hotels at least 1-2 months in advance for stays between October and May, when occupancy and rates rise due to Tucson's peak tourist season. This advance booking window secures better rates and avoids last-minute unavailability during high-demand periods.
- Prioritize properties with complimentary airport shuttles to avoid $15 to $30 one-way taxi fares from Tucson International Airport (TUS), 8 miles south of downtown. Verify shuttle schedules, as frequency may decrease after 20:00.
- Compare amenities like outdoor pools, free Wi-Fi, and onsite fitness centers when booking. A pool is particularly beneficial in Tucson, where daytime temperatures from April to September often exceed 90°F (32°C).
- Rental cars are recommended for exploring Tucson, as many top attractions such as Saguaro National Park and Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum are 8-15 miles from downtown and public transit coverage is limited for tourists.
- Follow US tipping standards: expect to tip 15-20% at restaurants, $15 per bag for bellhops, and $15 per night for housekeeping. Carry small bills or use your hotel’s digital tipping if offered.
- Check that your hotel has 24-hour front desk service and secure parking, a standard at most major brands. Ask staff for safe, well-lit walking routes, especially if you’ll be out after dark.
- Expect state and local taxes of 12% or more on Arizona hotel bookings, plus possible nightly resort and parking fees. Review your booking details for full cost breakdown before confirming.
- Ask hotel staff for recommendations on Sonoran dishes such as carne asada or elote, and cultural events like the Tucson Gem Show (late January to early February), which draws visitors worldwide.
- For early arrival or late departure, request early check-in or late check-out. Availability and fees vary by brand, and rates may increase during peak periods; confirm with the front desk before your arrival.
- Prepare for desert conditions by packing lightweight, UV-protective clothing and sunscreen, and drink water regularly. Nearly all hotels provide free ice or water stations; ask reception for locations.
