Top Tips
- Reserve rooms at least 3-4 weeks in advance during events at University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) or city festivals, as rates often rise by 15-25% within two weeks of high-occupancy dates. For maximum availability near Monroe Regional Airport and downtown, book early.
- Compare nightly rates using Priceline’s filters, then call hotel front desks directly to confirm airport shuttle schedules, parking fees, or unlisted discounts. Many Monroe hotels offer unpublished package rates or perks.
- Pre-arrange ground transport, as rideshares at Monroe Regional Airport (MLU) can have wait times over 20 minutes. Confirm your hotel’s shuttle hours when booking, or reserve a rental car early to ensure availability.
- Be prepared: Monroe hotel check-in usually starts at 3:00 PM and check-out by 11:00 AM or noon. Bring a government-issued photo ID and a credit/debit card, and request early or late check-in at booking if needed.
- Ask about complimentary parking and overnight policies. Most major Monroe hotels offer free guest parking, but confirm restrictions during festivals or airport extended stays.
- Traveling for business? Confirm the property offers Wi-Fi at 50 Mbps or higher and check for an onsite business center with printing. For a quieter stay, request rooms at least two floors above function spaces.
- Choose a room away from elevators, vending, or ice machines for reduced noise, especially on upper floors. For step-free or ground-floor access, clarify needs during booking to ensure accessible accommodations.
- If traveling with children, ask about crib availability, pool safety features, and mini-fridges. For pets, confirm maximum weight allowed (often 30–50 lb), nightly fees, and location of designated pet areas.
- June-November brings Monroe’s most humid weather and storm risk. Pack wicking clothing, a compact umbrella, SPF 30+ sunscreen, and insect repellent. Hotel umbrellas or rain ponchos are sometimes available on request.
- Follow Southern tipping norms: tip 15-20% in restaurants, $15- $30 per day for housekeeping, $15 per drink, and $15 per bag for bell staff or valet. These amounts reflect customary practices in Monroe.
- Use the in-room safe for passports, extra cash, and electronics. Always lock your vehicle and keep valuables out of view, as security arrangements differ between downtown and airport-adjacent hotels.
- Ask local hotel staff for authentic dining—try crawfish boils or Creole/Cajun venues within a 15-minute drive, and visit attractions like Biedenharn Museum & Garden for a local perspective.
- Request a full breakdown of nightly rates, as Louisiana applies state and local occupancy taxes—totaling 12-15%. Some hotels may add resort or parking fees. Verify before completing your booking.
- Monroe-area hotels are typically 100% smoke-free. If you smoke or vape, ask the front desk about outdoor designated smoking areas to avoid potential cleaning fees of $15 or higher.
- Begin greetings with 'sir' or 'ma’am' to reflect Louisiana’s Southern etiquette. Friendly and courteous exchanges are valued, especially at family-owned properties or with hotel staff in smaller towns.
- Check with hotel staff for favored safe walking routes to nearby restaurants and shops, especially after dark. Avoid unlit or less-frequented areas, as downtown Monroe safety can vary by block.
- Carry both digital and paper copies of reservation confirmations. Rural or storm-affected areas around Monroe may have inconsistent cell coverage, especially after severe weather events.
- Always present a valid government-issued photo ID at check-in. Masking and testing requirements are generally lifted in Louisiana as of 2024, but confirm current hotel policies if you have special health concerns.
- Booking for meetings? Reserve meeting rooms or boardrooms at least two weeks ahead and confirm details for AV equipment, catering options, and on-site parking.
- Solo travelers can request ground-floor rooms near the lobby for added security. For families, ask about connecting rooms, mini-fridges, and pools with shallow-entry or lifeguard hours.
- Select hotels within a 10-15 minute drive of Monroe Regional Airport (MLU) for easier transfers. Areas east of US-165 or near Pecanland Mall offer the quickest access.
- When booking, ask about corporate, AAA, or government discounts and watch for free breakfast inclusions. These add significant value at many international hotel brands in Monroe.
- Some Monroe hotels run free shuttles or charge $15 per ride to local attractions—confirm schedules at booking, as rideshares remain limited late evenings.
- Adhere to hotel quiet hours, often enforced 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM. If traveling with a group or children, request a ground-floor or end-of-hallway room to minimize disruptions.
- Join major hotel loyalty programs—frequent guests can earn free nights or room upgrades after as few as five stays or ten nights within a calendar year.
- Enjoy regional Southern hospitality. Hotels in Monroe often provide complimentary welcome drinks or local-made snacks, such as pralines or pecan brittle, on arrival.
