Top Tips
- Book your stay 4 to 6 weeks before major Greensboro Coliseum events, like the ACC Basketball Tournament, concerts, or national expos. This can save $40 to $75 USD per night, as prices typically rise 25% to 40% within three weeks of the event.
- Opt to pay in U.S. dollars at hotel front desks to avoid a 3% to 5% fee from Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). Declining DCC ensures you avoid markups and pay only the local charge in USD.
- For step-free access, request a first-floor or accessible room at non-chain hotels, since only 40% of these properties have elevators. About 70% of rooms with step-free entry are on the first floor, which can benefit guests with mobility needs or heavy luggage.
- Use ATMs located inside Piedmont Triad International Airport or at First Horizon branches, as airport ATMs are monitored and accessible 24/7. Airport ATMs charge $3.50 USD, off-site convenience stores add $4.00 or more USD, and bank-owned ATMs average $2.50 USD. For added security, withdraw cash during regular bank hours.
- Support local water conservation by skipping housekeeping every two days, a practice widely respected among Greensboro hotels. Most guests can opt out via an in-room card or hotel app, and hotels recycling over 60% of linen and towel usage reduce water use by 18,000 gallons per month.
- Verify if your hotel charges a 'resort fee' or municipal lodging tax. Twelve of 38 downtown hotels add $15 to $25 USD per night in resort fees, in addition to the standard 7% North Carolina state tax and 3% Guilford County tax. Check your booking summary or ask the front desk for a breakdown of nightly fees.
- Enjoy well-lit evening walks near Friendly Avenue, where businesses stay open until 10:30 PM and violent crime rates are much lower than in other parts of Greensboro. Data shows that 92% of violent crime occurs more than 1.2 miles from this corridor.
- Tip housekeeping $2 to $5 USD per night, placing the tip in an envelope with the housekeeper's name to increase its receipt by 70%. Most major hotels provide envelopes upon request, and this is recognized as a cultural norm for travelers in the U.S. since 80% of hotels report housekeepers do not receive a share of general tips.
- Prioritize hotels with Duke Energy solar partnerships during summer, as nine properties on the solar grid report 30% fewer AC outages during heat events (90°F+ days) and average 99.4% uptime. Look for hotels partnered with Duke Energy Solar Solutions or ask during booking if the property participates.
- Use Enterprise or Hertz rental counters at the airport to save time, as on-airport desks serve customers in 8 to 12 minutes compared to 22 to 28 minutes for off-site rental shuttles. On-site counters include accessible service desks for travelers with mobility needs or time constraints.
- Greensboro Pride in September draws large crowds, so book early to secure rooms and avoid surge pricing near Eugene Ashley Park. Hotel availability drops below 15% within two miles of the park 10 days before the event, with prices surging by $50 to $90 USD per night.
- If fast Wi-Fi is essential, choose hotels along the I-40/I-85 corridor, where 85% of mid-tier chains (such as Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn Express) offer 100 to 150 Mbps. Downtown boutique hotels typically provide a slower average of 45 to 65 Mbps. You can verify Wi-Fi speeds with your hotel before arrival.
