The thing I like most it like home away from home.

Where to stay in San Diego
Learn about the top neighbourhoods of San Diego
As highway handy as can be, encompassing I-8, I-15, I-805 and then some, this area affords a rich choice of hotel options. Here, guests are within five miles of downtown San Diego and equally close to Ocean Beach and SeaWorld to the west. Guests can also stay fashion forward at the upscale, open-air Fashion Valley Mall.
Those on a mission for sand, surf and fun in the sun are lured by the splashy appeal of San Diego's Mission Bay, a lovely lagoon inlet a few miles north of city center San Diego. It's where guests flip for Shamu shows at SeaWorld, while others head for Mission Bay Aquatic Center - the world's largest instructional waterfront facility - to learn how to surf before hitting the cool-dude beach scene.
Those dropping anchor here get prime waterfront access a few miles outside of San Diego International Airport. A destination for the "super yacht set," Shelter Island is all things nautical, boasting marinas, waterfront hotels, seafood restaurants and bayside parks. In Point Loma, guests can tiptoe through tide pools, board a whale-watching tour and climb the lighthouse at nearby Cabrillo National Monument for spectacular 360-degree views.

Frequently Asked Questions
Top Tips
- Book downtown San Diego hotels 6 to 9 months ahead when major events like Comic-Con are scheduled, as rates can increase by 30 to 50% and rooms often sell out. Confirm event schedules at the San Diego Convention Center to optimize timing.
- Factor daily resort fees of $15 to $35 per night into your budget when staying in La Jolla, Coronado, or Mission Bay. These fees can raise total nightly costs by 15 to 20%, and often include amenities like pool access or local shuttle service; review inclusions before booking.
- Check parking rates in advance, as onsite parking at major downtown hotels often ranges from $15 to $70 per night. To save, compare offsite garages or use rideshare apps such as Lyft or Uber for trips around central San Diego.
- Expect weekend surcharges in the Gaslamp Quarter, with room rates typically 20 to 30% higher on Fridays and Saturdays because of nightlife demand. Lock in rates early if you plan to visit during festival weekends.
- Accessible rooms offering step-free or ramp access and features like roll-in showers are more widely available in larger, modern hotels. Confirm availability with your hotel in advance, as options and inventory can be limited; request specifics if you need visual alarms or lowered surfaces.
- Noise levels near Gaslamp Quarter bars and clubs often extend until 1 to 2 AM on weekends. If sensitive to noise, request a room facing away from the street or inquire about quieter floors at booking.
- San Diego’s trolley system offers efficient access between the downtown area, Old Town, and Mission Valley, helping avoid daily hotel parking fees of $15 to $70. Check the MTS trolley map online to plan routes or use rideshare for flexible late-night trips.
- Wi-Fi speeds can vary by hotel and room type; some business centers provide higher-speed connections for remote work. Confirm availability of upgraded Wi-Fi or business lounge access if you need reliable service for virtual meetings.
- Hotels along the Embarcadero offer direct bay views and close access (within 0.5 mi) to attractions like the USS Midway Museum, usually at a 15 to 25% price premium. Consider if location convenience justifies the cost based on your itinerary.
- Verify current potable water advisories before drinking tap water, especially in newly developed or outlying areas. Major hotels typically filter their water, but it is prudent to confirm with the property or use bottled water for peace of mind.
