The location, decor, and staff all excellent.
Parking was great, elevator to main level nice with suit cases, gal at desk had a pimple pad on her face which to me was not really high star presentation.

The staff and the cleanliness. Location is great spot between Amherst and Northampton. Excellent location for college visits
The front desk clerk made my stay. She did her best to rectify the small items I requested (working remote control, where fitness room located, etc.) and time as friendly and professional.
I've stayed at this hotel twice. The first time my room dirty and run down but I never got a chance to leave a review. The second room was much better (cleaner and more up to date). I think its more on par with 2 star hotels and not a 2.5 star.

The continental breakfast was great. They had a good variety, hot coffee, waffles, fresh egg, sausage, and bacon.
Friendly staff. Location and convenient stores near by. Breakfast was good as well.
this hotel had all the features that one expects: Clean room, spacious, clean and well lit bathroom, comfortable bed, and good location. We also enjoyed the great selection at the breakfast buffet which was complementary.

Large clean room. The addition of a ceiling fan was a surprising and welcome perk of the room I was in
The breakfast was not great.
Staff was kind and helpful. I lost my quarters in the washer. A room cleaner suggested that I tell the front desk and the front desk reimbursed me.

The location - close proximity to several restaurants and some shopping. The only low point was it seemed that the area needed some infrastructure work. Not the hotels problem, but still noticeable.
Close proximity to restaurants and a mall was a plus; Staff very friendly and accommodating; breakfast buffet had sufficient options; pool availability for kids was great

I have pictures of the disgusting unclean poorly managed hotel. There was blood stains on the mattress not just a little one it was the size of a basketball, the smoke alarm was wrapped in a plastic bag the bathroom shower looked like it wasn't cleaned
The ice and coffee are the only two positive things I can find to compliment on. Zero sarcasm.
Clean room and bath

My room had to be changed due to the sheets being dirty. The second room wasn¿t much better. The toilet had never been flushed so there was a mess there. The shower head managed to wet everything but your person.

Top Tips
- Reserve your hotel 4-6 weeks in advance during UMass Amherst move-in or move-out periods (late August to mid-September, mid-December, late January). Rates often rise 30-40% and fewer than 5 rooms remain available nightly. Booking early helps secure standard rates and preferred amenities, like early check-in or breakfast. Confirm cancellation terms, as they may differ for peak dates.
- Choose hotels within 400 meters west of Main Street, near Pearl Street and Thornes Marketplace, for 10-minute walk access to 90% of downtown restaurants, banks, and pharmacies. This area is pedestrian-friendly and safe in the evening. Ask about late-night front desk or security options for added peace of mind.
- For less nighttime noise, pick hotels west of the I-91 junction, where sound measures 50-55 dB, below the 65-70 dB typical on Route 9 east. This matches WHO sleep guidelines. Sound-sensitive guests should request rooms away from major roads or elevators.
- If you plan to use Amtrak, ask if your hotel has a free shuttle to Springfield Union Station. Only 3 of 12 Northampton hotels, including Hotel Northampton, offer this. Alternatives are a 15-20 minute walk or a Lyft ride for $12 to $15. Request shuttle schedules if arriving after 8 PM.
- Support sustainability by booking hotels with PV solar or Massachusetts Green Lodging certification. Four Northampton properties, including The Charles Hotel Northampton, use 25% less energy than others. During May to August, ask about water-saving measures, such as optional towel reuse. For the environment, look for refill stations instead of single-use water bottles.
- Use local credit union ATMs, such as Easthampton Savings Bank or Hampshire Cooperative Bank, to avoid $3 to $5 foreign transaction fees and 3.5-5.5% currency markups. These ATMs do not charge surcharges or use Dynamic Currency Conversion. International travelers should notify their bank before travel to prevent card blocks.
- Request step-free access (from street to room with ramps or elevators) at boutique inns before arrival. Only 4 of 12 small hotels, including The Residence, meet full accessibility criteria. The latest municipal audit found 67% of properties lack level entries or elevators. Confirm door width and in-room accessibility features if needed.
- Most hotels offer Wi-Fi speeds of 45-65 Mbps, but upload rates dip to 8-12 Mbps from 7-9 PM. For video calls or remote work, Forbes Library provides 100 Mbps free Wi-Fi. Ask your hotel about business center or 24-hour quiet zones for more reliable connections.
- Decline daily housekeeping to support local waste policies. Eighty percent of hotels use opt-in cleaning, reducing linen waste by 1.8 lbs per room-night. Guests with allergy or medical needs can request extra cleaning or hypoallergenic amenities from the front desk.
- Tip hotel restaurant staff 15-18%. In Massachusetts, service staff rely on tips in addition to the $15 per hour minimum wage. Consider 18% for full-service or special requests. For groups, check if a gratuity is already added.
- Book direct if the occupancy tax is over 14.5%. Northampton applies a combined 14.75% tax and surcharges, and online travel agencies also average a $22 fee. Booking direct lets you review the tax breakdown and request loyalty points if available.
- For stays in April or May, select hotels with backup power. Only two, such as Hotel Northampton, confirm generators for guest rooms and elevators, which is important since nor'easters cause outages for up to 20% of Hampshire County. Notify your hotel in advance if you require powered medical devices or refrigeration.
