Learn about the top neighbourhoods of Little Rock
Razorbacks pride resides here in this area west of downtown Little Rock and home to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Lions, tigers and bears also reside here, thanks to the area's beloved Little Rock Zoo, one of the state's greatest educational and conservation resources, and a family favorite. Top Tips
- Book downtown hotels 6 to 8 weeks ahead for the Arkansas State Fair (October) to avoid 35-50% price surges. Rates near War Memorial Stadium rise to $129-$189 USD (from $99-$139 USD) during the 12-day fair. For best flexibility, check if your chosen booking channel offers free cancellation until at least 24 hours before arrival during event periods.
- Choose hotels on higher floors (6+) in flood-prone areas near the Arkansas River during spring. Properties within 0.5 miles of the river, especially south of I-630, face elevated flood risk in March-May when river levels exceed 32 ft. Ask your hotel if they offer emergency updates or relocation support during severe weather events.
- Opt for Embassy Suites or DoubleTree near I-30 for free hot breakfast with gluten-free options. 87% of Hilton- and Hyatt-branded extended-stay properties in Little Rock disclose gluten-free breakfast items. If you have dietary needs, notify the hotel ahead for tailored breakfast options at chain locations.
- Use in-room microwaves at motels on University Avenue (AR-10) to reduce food spend. Budget motels here average $62-$84 USD per night and allow cooking; takeout from local Mexican restaurants (e.g., Mi Rancho, $8-$12 USD entrées) cuts meal costs by approximately 40%. Many motels on University Avenue include a mini-fridge, making it easier to store leftovers or fresh groceries.
- Avoid dynamic currency conversion (DCC) at hotel front desks when paying with foreign cards; DCC adds 3-5% hidden fees. Always select 'charge in USD' even if prompted otherwise. Ask reception staff to process your card in US dollars to avoid extra charges; some major hotels display currency choice clearly on their terminals.
- Prioritize hotels with 1 Gbps Wi-Fi if working remotely near the River Market District. Fiber-connected properties (e.g., The Capital Hotel, Graduate by Hilton) offer 850-950 Mbps down; others average 80-150 Mbps with evening congestion. If faster Wi-Fi is critical, ask whether the property has a dedicated business center or workspace.
- Request step-free access explicitly, even in 'ADA' rooms at older properties. 60% of hotels built before 2000 in central Little Rock have ADA rooms with threshold steps (up to 3 inches); confirm roll-in shower and zero-entry doorway. Under the ADA, you can request full step-free access; clarify doorway and bathroom features before booking.
- Skip taxis; use Lime scooters or Metroplan shuttle for under $3 USD near downtown. Scooter rides from River Market to Clinton Library cost $1 USD + $0.39 USD per minute (average $2.80 USD); Metroplan Route 10 runs every 30 minutes on weekdays, fare $1.50 USD. If scooters or shuttles are unavailable, app-based rideshares like Uber or Lyft operate citywide.
- Avoid booking heated pool access in summer (June-August). Outdoor pools at 92% of Little Rock hotels are unheated and rarely used when ambient temperatures exceed 88°F (average summer high: 91-95°F). Bring sun protection and check if the hotel provides shaded areas by outdoor pools.
- Tip housekeeping $2-$5 USD per night, left daily in an envelope with a 'Thank You' note. This is standard practice at full-service hotels; gratuities are not automatically included in resort fees. Select hotel chains enable digital tips for housekeeping via their mobile apps; check your stay’s app for this option.
- Choose properties with ENERGY STAR or EPA WaterSense partnerships during drought months. Little Rock saw 23% below-average rainfall in summer 2022; WaterSense-partner hotels (e.g., The Capital Hotel) reduced guest water use by 30% via low-flow fixtures. Some hotels feature refillable water stations for guests—bring a bottle to stay hydrated and reduce single-use waste.
- Verify if resort fees include access to nearby recreational facilities. At hotels like The Stay Hotel, a $15 USD per night resort fee covers free kayak rental ($25 USD value) at the Arkansas River Trail launch point 0.4 miles away. At check-in, ask for a list of all resort fee inclusions—you may gain access to extras like kayak or bike rentals at no extra charge.
