Picked up a dog tick from the rug in the room. Must have been a dog in the room at some time before our arrival. It bit me. The GOOD thing is I will likely not be infected with any disease.

Top Tips
- Book at least 4-6 weeks ahead for lakefront and family rooms, as these Plattsburgh hotel categories often sell out for summer weekends and holidays. Demand peaks in July and August; compare room rates and dates early for the best availability.
- Factor in New York's lodging taxes - current rates include state, county, and city occupancy taxes, totaling up to 14% above the nightly rate. Always review the final price breakdown before confirming your booking.
- Plattsburgh International Airport (PBG) has fewer than 5 commercial flights per day and limited taxi or rideshare options. Confirm your hotel’s airport shuttle operating hours or pre-book ground transport, especially for arrivals after 20:00.
- Renting a car is recommended for trips beyond downtown; Plattsburgh bus routes run on limited schedules, and sites like Point Au Roche State Park and Adirondack trailheads are 8-20 miles from most hotels.
- Bring a government-issued photo ID (passport for international guests) and a credit or debit card for check-in. U.S. hotels typically pre-authorize a hold for incidentals, which can range from $15 to $200 per stay.
- Onsite parking is complimentary at most Plattsburgh hotels and valuable for day trips to Burlington, VT (about 1 hour by car). Check in advance for any restrictions on long-term or oversized vehicle parking.
- Follow U.S. tipping customs: $15 per bag for a bellhop, $15 per night for housekeeping, and $15 for concierge services based on complexity. Leave tips daily for housekeeping, since staff may rotate.
- Request cribs, rollaway beds, or pool access for families, and verify business amenities (high-speed Wi-Fi, printer access, meeting rooms) before arrival. Some hotels have limited supplies, so reserve early if needed.
- Select your hotel location based on your plans: stay in downtown or lakefront areas for restaurants and nightlife, near SUNY Plattsburgh or the airport for events, or the outskirts for direct access to outdoor recreation.
- If traveling with pets, confirm pet policies before booking. Most Plattsburgh hotels that accept dogs charge $15 to $75 per stay and may limit weight to 50 lbs; reserve a pet-friendly room in advance, as quotas are strict.
- Winters bring heavy snow and freezing temperatures; arrange late check-in instructions and request heated parking if arriving December to March. In summer, bring insect repellent for lakefront areas due to mosquitoes.
- Smoking is prohibited indoors by New York law, and hotels enforce quiet hours starting at 22:00. Ask your hotel for outdoor smoking areas if needed.
- If planning outdoor activities in the Adirondacks, store food securely and follow hotel guidance, as local wildlife, especially bears, are active in warmer months. Many hotels offer gear storage for hiking or picnic supplies.
- Upon check-in, inspect your room for cleanliness, hot water, AC or heating, Wi-Fi, and bedding condition. Report any issues, especially for bed bugs, immediately to management for swift resolution.
- Ask the front desk about local dining, shuttles, or excursion partnerships. Many hotels offer coupons or partner deals for attractions like Lake Champlain boat tours and gear rentals.
- For solo travelers, choose a well-reviewed hotel with secure parking and ample lighting. Use the room safe for valuables, and request official local taxi numbers at reception if rideshare wait times exceed 15 minutes.
- Canadian guests should allow up to 45 minutes for border formalities when driving. Confirm customs wait times and hotel parking rules if leaving a vehicle before or after border transit.
- Most area hotels have lifted universal COVID mask mandates, but policies may change seasonally. Confirm contactless check-in or housekeeping frequency requests directly with the property.
- Ask about loyalty programs and check for seasonal package rates, such as breakfast inclusions, free parking, or late checkout. These offers can save 10-15% compared to standard daily rates.
- If hiking or boating, ask if your hotel provides drying racks or secure storage for wet gear, kayaks, or bikes. This is especially useful after Lake Champlain or Adirondack outings, as some hotels have guest-use laundry onsite.
