Pros +
- Quiet and quaint.
- Convenient location with good parking on the outskirts of a lovely friendly village. Food was nice.
- The hotel is charming and an excellent location for visiting Campster Cairns, Stirling Castle, the Whaligoe Steps, and John O' Groats. It was off season so there was a skeletal staff who were just lovely.
Cons -
- There didn't seem to be many other guests, yet we were put on the 2nd floor at the back with no view and the wifi was terrible. Also, off season meant that finding staff was challenging.
- As soon as you walked in the front door you could smell the damp musky smell, you could see that the place hadn't been cleaned .Once we had seen the reception and dinning area we were dreading the thought of seeing our room . On opening the room door which we had booked the damp musky smell just hit you in the face and the freezing cold air of the room ,there had been no heating turned on .The wall paper was peeling of the walls the bed and towels felt damp, certainly hadn't been cleaned properly. The heating should have been turned on so that the room was warm for our arrival. .The service of the waitress was very poor, I had to ask what the soup of the day was .My husband decided to have battered haddock and chips to be told there was none available he ended up with a very average burger,we both had chips which had been covered in black pepper so wasn't fit to eat. I asked for a decaff coffee i was informed they did not offer it .We thought our dog was included in the price on the booking which was £88 but we're asked to pay an extra £20 for him on arrival which I consider to be quite a cheek when they didn't even offer to give him a bowl of water, I thought it was supposed to be dog friendly. After a very poor nights sleep due to taking hours to warm up ,we thought it would be nice to freshen up with a shower but we heard a dripping sound in the bathroom, water was coming down from a spotlight, i turned the light off , threw towels on the floor to absorb the water .By this time we had had enough so we handed our keys in at reception informed them of the leak in ceiling and left as we had to catch an early ferry.
- Completely outdated without even the slightest willingness to hide it. Room was big but needs renovation/furniture etc. Skip this hotel. At least 2x too expensive for the quality offered

Nothing positive at all, only the nice people of the staff in the hotel

Charming old Inn. People were kind. We were only there one night.
The staff were pleasant
The owners are losing an uphill struggle to generate enough income to maintain an old and large building out of its time. The standard room was white van man when trying to save on expenses. The award winning restaurant, local produce etc, was a joke. Standard boil in a bag pub food.
The staff and welcome were super and the food was great!
The hotel is in much need of a revamp. The rooms are very dated and not comfortable.
Staff were nice
Dated hotel. Bed very small and uncomfy.
Staff very welcoming and hospitable. Food was outstanding.
Bedroom was a little ‘tired’.Double glazing units had blown so couldn’t see out of windows and made the room noisy from traffic and other residents leaving very early for their coach trip. Curtains very sheer material so didn’t block out early morning light.
Well located on the NC500 with availability as we were passing through. The receptionist's welcome was warm and friendly, and the evening meal was very tasty.
The service in the restaurant was poor. Well meaning, but untrained.
Sam the owner, the front desk person, waitress and customer satisfaction specialist has very professional and can do ATTITUDE
The hotel has a very nice Scottish vibes and it feels full of history. The staff were very nice and friendly and Sam was very welcoming and gave us suggestions for places to visit. We arrived late in the evening after the kitchen was closed due to road works, but they didn't let us down and they prepared a really delicious dinner for us. room was very nice, clean and comfy.
The host, Sam! She really makes everyone feel welcome, doing all she can for us. The food was absolutely lovely! Even though we arrived later, we were still accommodate with what we wanted.
The hotel was as expected and just what we needed after a couple of days walking the John O Groats Trail.
Comfy bedsStaff very friendly.Owner was great.Sociable bar area
Location We fined in twice and the meals were good.
The online details of the deluxe room we chose didn’t seem to match the room we got. We were reassured it was a deluxe room when we enquired.
The price. A good rate for a budget hotel
No draft beer and only one unopened bottle of pino! Felt a little understaffed at times and the carpets needed a good hover.
Very old fashioned but welcoming feel about this place. Although it looks and smells old you could see care had been taken to ensure it was clean. Really nice biscuits and water in the room and the towels were lovely.
Not much selection in the bar but in quite a remote area.
The food was great, the downstairs area was comfortable and spacious and the staff were really helpful. It was in a perfect location for us and exceeded our expectations.
We would have loved a better view from our window.
The location on the main road is pretty convenient if touring. Staff very friendly.
It’s a bit of an aged property, poorly maintained in common areas. Could really do with a good refurbishment. The photos on website don’t really transmit what awaits you. Tea and coffee making facilities in room but you need to buy the coffee sachets / hot chocolate! Duvet provided does not take into account the weather conditions. It is far too warm for summer weather even with the window open. Not too many breakfast options available, no “continental” options aside from scones which you don’t really fancy first thing in the morning. Orange juice which is actually fruit squash. Weak, diluted coffee. But in all fairness the eggs which were ordered were cooked very well indeed. Nice greasy hash browns.
