Pros +
- Lovely staff, efficient, friendly and amazing food!
- Our room overlooked the garden down to the river. Quite beautiful.
- Lots of character, lovely bar area with a roaring fire. Good food in the restaurant. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Really handy for Newmarket.
Cons -
- A little music noise from the restaurant below but we're early to bed so it would be fine for later sleepers. It wasn't excessive.
- Squeaky floors and uncomfortable bed in George room. I have stayed in Elizabeth room was much better.
- Noise throughout the day/night spoiled my stay, I could not sleep. It sounded like the noise was coming from generators running outside or the extractor fans from the kitchen. I should have also read the small print, as I was unaware that the restaurant/bar was closed on a Monday & Tuesday, so I had to venture out for a meal. I know this was no major hardship. however, perhaps a skeleton staffing crew could have been made available to provide a snack or beverage during this closed period!

I really love everything about the place.
Squeaky floors and uncomfortable bed in George room. I have stayed in Elizabeth room was much better.
Lovely hotel with quirky touches. Lovely room decor and a comfortable bed

It’s a nice old hotel / hall. Rooms all tastefully done
My room above the kitchen
It's lovely building & the staff were very nice And great bonus was free car parking
Breakfast was OK We got bill for 4 orange juices Every hotel we stay in orange juice is part of Breakfast And breakfast was very greasy scrambled egg very runny which went on to the other food also a lot of shouting from the kitchen no need really
Lovely place. Good staff. Good restaurant
Room. Was next to the road. Got traffic noise . Could do with some updating on windows .maybe old building but you can do something. Even put ear plugs in the room.
Old English feel.Staff where lovely
Banging noise from one of the rooms being renovated.
Location ideal for exploring nearby towns such as Ely and Kings Lynn and Saffron Walden on our journey home. The Elizabeth room was lovely overlooking all of the rear gardens etcBreakfast was good but more used to self serve buffet style rather than table service but understand that with only 8 rooms it is more sensible to do it as is.As always I forget to read the small print so was wandering why a picnic basket appeared on Sunday when we returned from day out, but when double checking the booking realised you close kitchens on Monday and Tuesday for obvious reasons.Dinner menu on Sunday was good and we enjoyed our meal.Staff pleasant and helpfull
Spacious and pleasant surroundings
Provided with a whole house just for one night's business stay - was not really an appropriate space and a little inconvenient to be split level, especially when physically tired after a hard day's graft. A bit run down in parts. Wifi did not work at all and no television aerial, so no TV. Could be cleaner. Sofa was covered in stains. No restaurant - not made clear on listing or website the opening times. Local takeaways can deliver but quality was awful from the one I selected. All in all, not an easy or comfortable stay after a long day.
Bad experience in this hotel
It was so dirty, full of spiders, the closets full of dirty bed sheets. The AC was not working. It was a bad experience
Pretty and welcoming I liked the interiors and the separate room we ate in the bedroom was quite big and the bathroom was spotless the grounds were fun for the kids in the party
No staff around in the morning when I was trying to get transport info - the staff member I eventually found that helped me was willing to help but didn’t know much about buses or taxis etc - plus the hotel is way out of bury which I hadn’t appreciated properly and I felt stranded because I had no car
Everyone was so friendly, the owners were absolutely wonderful, so welcoming. They were happy to help with anything. My parents are very elderly, I went with them to help, and all the staff were so wonderful, especially with my dad who has alzheimers so can get a little confused. I'd highly recommend it here, one of our best stays.
We stayed in the Elizabeth room on the first floor which was beautifully furnished and very clean. This room gives you a great view over the back lawns down to the river. We were there on a Sunday & Monday evening. The restaurant/bar closes at 7:30 on Sunday & is closed completed on Monday/Tuesday so it was very quiet. If you are there when the restaurant and back patio is in use it might be a bit noisy as you are right over it.
Some attention to quality of small details. Window blind in bathroom had slats broken off. Toilet seat surface was cracked in multiple places. Breakfast hamper supplied for mornings restaurant was closed was very basic, not really worth the bother for an establishment that normally has a good quality restaurant. Amount of food supplied was not enough for 2 people for 2 days. Other pub in the village is also closed on Monday/Tuesday.On Monday/Tuesdays there were no staff to interact with - no cleaners, reception etc Owners were on site but did not really acknowledge or check on visitors.
Breakfast was perfect, lots of choice and delicious
Sometimes difficult to find a member of staff - but they were very friendly and helpful when we found them :)
There was a hamper in lieu of breakfast, and I hadn't realised that breakfast was not available on a Monday. I was a little disappointed, but didn't think that was a deal breaker. I was a little underwhelmed with the room, I have never been a fan of 4 poster beds and didn't really have a good night's sleep. The bonus for me was that Chad, who was there as we checked out, showed me rooms that would have been altogether more suitable . . . .I think the rooms Victoria and Elizabeth had views over the cedar lawns . . .so much more my thing, and better bathroom facilities!
The bed was not great, it felt quite claustrophobic. The bathroom was disappointing, particularly a very small shower . . . . I did mention when we arrived that I was keen to know what time breakfast was . . .and only learned then that it wasn't available. Next time I would appreciate a better room and maybe if I book directly this would be an option!
Beautiful setting
No staff on check in or check out. Had to go and find someone from the restaurant. No breakfast included or advised of having as an extra. Music playing until 11pm and started again at 7.30am.
Unfortunately we didn't get to enjoy a sit down breaky....we had a mini hamper. The noise transfer above room Louis kept me awake until the early hours, then to woken by Road traffic on a busy A road....facilities and room outstanding.
Beautiful property with amazing grounds. The room was very nice with comfortable bed and seating. Food is homemade and cooked to order. Attention from the staff was perfect. An amazing stay .
