Pros +
- The food was excellent, the dinner in the Chapel restaurant was first class, kudos to the chef. The atmosphere of the Hotel and its location were on point.
- Thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Bodmin Jail Hotel for one night. The restoration is modern and upscale with high novelty factor. Loved the bar for a pre-dinner drink and our meals in the Chapel restaurant were of a high standard- delicious and plentiful.
- Unique experience staying in an old jail and how they have turned it into a hotel is beautifully done.with historical nooks and crannys. The food in the restaurant was outstanding and catered for my gluten free requirements, and breakfast equally outstanding with plenty of fresh choices. Highly recommend experiencing staying here to anyone.staff extremely welcoming and helpful.
Cons -
- The staff were very polite, but not very well trained, the wine was poured by the bottle neck, and no tasting was proffered. The amenities in the room were lacking for a hotel of this character - no hand lotion for example, very poor instant coffee and tea selection.
- Poor lighting in the cell for hair and make-up. Suggest adding some self lighting free standing mirrors for make-up application.
- Nothing to dislike at all.

Breakfast was good. Although they charge £1 extra for spinach and 1£ extra for ham.
We arrived about 2:30 and were told we had to wait until 3 to check in even though we found out that the hotel was 1/2 empty. Also when I asked about what to do in the area, I was told to Google it, even though there are 2 mansions within 10 minutes of the hotel.
Converting this imposing historic building into a luxury hotel has been superbly done having overcome considerable technical difficulties whilst conserving its original features. Our room consisted of three old prison cells converted into one room with excellent distribution. One cell is for sleeping, another is for relaxing and the other cell has been converted into a spacious luxury bathroom. We dined in the restaurant which is situated in the old prison chapel. The setting and lighting are perfect for that romantic dinner for 2. The meat dishes which we tried on the first night were superb however, the fish dishes on the second night were not so good. Breakfast, which is also served in the chapel, is excellent. The rooms retain their connection with history via a plaque on the wall showing a picture and the story of one of the former inmates – an interesting touch.Guests should not be put off by its imposing architecture or its former use. The Bodmin Jail is a very good hotel and well visiting for whatever reason.
There is a door which connects the accommodation to the restaurant however, its use is prohibited. It is very difficult to understand why guest should be put to the inconvenience of leaving the hotel and entering the restaurant from an outside door, only to go upstairs again.
Interesting and historical building
The Chapel Restaurant was a disappointment. The food arrived cold, we had to ask several times for the accompanying sauces and salt and pepper. The staff were very polite and were working hard, but they seemed untrained. The food at both dinner and breakfast was mediocre.
The hotel was fantastic and a great experience. You can wander the wings and get a feel for what a prison is like. Love that some of the original features have been kept.Loved it.
The breakfast was good but a couple of little niggles but I spoke to the staff and it was recorded to be improved.
Very impressed with the room however lighting was poor .Restaurants staff & food very good
No information available in the room ie how to work the air con , safe & what time meals were served .
The historic aspect was very interesting. The restaurant & bar were lovely. Breakfast was amazing.
Although you can get an easy access room, there are still stairs into restaurant & bar areas.
The hotel and room design. The reception staff were great and the historic feel had been maintained but with a modern twist.
Limited car parking and the cocktail bar staff weren’t overly friendly.
Clean, excellent location, food and staff exceptional. Room very nice apart from heat.
The room was far far to hot even with air conditioning at full. it was not comfortable
EVERYTHING! Fantastic place to stay. First, we want to give kudos to the staff. Jade, Oli, Caitlyn, and everyone in reception were friendly, helpful, and efficient. Wait staff in the dining room at both breakfast and dinner were wonderful. Aday was our dinner waiter both nights and was very friendly. We weren't able to get the names of the others, but they were great. Staff we met anywhere in the hotel were friendly. We loved our room. Whoever designed the rooms "did it right" by maintaining the integrity of the original cells to create comfortable and unique rooms (each room consists of 3 original cells: bathroom, sitting area, bedroom area), including the stone walls and ceilings. Our bathroom had both a shower stall and a separate tub. The bed was very comfortable. There was a safe available to use in the room. The food for both breakfast and dinner was delicious. The hotel is conveniently located across from the Camel Trail, which we availed ourselves of for a pleasant walk. We are glad we treated ourselves to 2 nights at the Bodmin Jail Hotel to give us some relaxing time in a unique setting before our 10-day Cornwall hiking trip.
Nothing!
unique hotel that provides a memorable stay, rooms are spacious and very clean. there's a plaque in the rooms with information of who was once detained there which is a very nice touch. the old chapel has been turned into the restaurant which has excellent decor and the food was very fresh, cooked to a high standard and didn't break the bank. highly recommend to anyone looking for a stay that's outside of the ordinary.
Beautiful hotel, converted to a very high standard! Fascinating history, albeit slightly unsettling late at night!
We felt our evening meal in the restaurant was very expensive for the quality of the food, although the breakfast included in the bed & breakfast package was really lovely.
Amazing luxury restoration of ancient prison, great breakfast, and comfortable cells, but no slippers or body lotion
The restaurant needs to become more imaginative and first class to encourage return visits. Prison walls are a tad depressing without an exceptional gastronomic experience.
Awesome, clean friendly and welcoming
I feel that the paying guest wld benefit from their own private space for drinks
The room was very clean and spacious, shower was also very good with a nice selection of soap and shampoo. Lovely soft dressing gowns provided in room but no slippers. Hardly a luxury experience without some waffer thin sliders on.Drinks very over priced. Had a mojioto which came in a spoons style tumbler with a few blocks of ice in it very poor. We didn't eat in the restaurant as menu was not to our taste. Overall it was a nice stay and staff were all good and breakfast was decent.
A truly unique experience, unlike a typical hotel stay. I appreciate the effort the management has put into transforming a former jail into a fully functional 4-star hotel. The interior design and the level of upkeep clearly reflect the team's passion and dedication to this project. For anyone looking for an extraordinary staycation, this place is definitely worth a visit.
The signage directing guests to other parts of the hotel could be clearer, as it was a bit confusing to navigate.
chromecast in the room.History of the property. Stunning rooms. Served breakfast. Free parking. Complementary drinks in the room. Bathrobes.
Only one mat in the bathroom to share between bath and shower. Phone didn’t work to call for room service. Cold coffee served at breakfast.
The young staff were so polite especially Mima , she looked after us and we felt very special. We thought the rooms were first class and it must of been the comfiest bed we have ever had to sleep on. It was quiet , loved the quirkiness of the jail. FANTASTIC STAY ?
Nothing we couldn't fault it
