Pros +
- Breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of food and fresh juices that we really enjoyed. The room was a bit small, but that wasn’t a major issue — it was clean, and the comfortable bed made our stay pleasant. The pool was a good size and had a nice design. We also appreciated having a coffee machine in the room, which added to our experience. While the hotel does look a little old and could use some refreshing, its vintage charm also gives it a unique character, almost like stepping back in time. There was a shuttle to reserved beach area near by, however don't forget to "register" to the shuttle otherwise you may have to stay!
- Beautiful hotel and lovely staff. Superb breakfast, and comfortable, clean rooms.
- Excellent property with lots of possibilities like golf, gym, seimming, tennis, etc.
Cons -
- When we first checked in, there was no water bottle in the room, even though a card stated “this bottle is complimentary, next ones will be charged.” Regarding coffee, the initial setup was balanced with 2 regular and 2 decaf. However, each day the decaf kept increasing while the regular coffee was not replenished. Fortunately, I prefer decaf, but my partner was disappointed as she prefers regular coffee. As for towels, everything was fine during the first two days, but afterward, they started to go missing one by one. By our final day, we had no face towel, no foot towel, and so on. It almost felt like the last couple of days, housekeeping might not have been paying much attention to our room. Last but not least, about the pool — although we usually prefer the sea, my son enjoyed the pool, so we used it nearly every afternoon. Unfortunately, it often appeared dirty. I am sure the water is filtered, but if you check the corner near the towel stand, there seem to be “dead zones” where circulation does not reach, and dirt remains throughout the day. Sorry but when you are 5 star hotel, you must take care of these in a better way.
- Airconditioning in the room could have been better as well wifi connection. Wifi was excellent in public areas
- The interior decor was rather old fashioned and dark, but the grounds are superb, and in better weather the inside wouldn’t matter at all!

Excellent breakfast, really fresh and ripe fruit. The Grill for dinner was great, and friendly staff
The interior decor was rather old fashioned and dark, but the grounds are superb, and in better weather the inside wouldn’t matter at all!
Not much going on if you are not a golfer. Breakfast was good but service slow and place very dated
The staff were very friendly & helpful. Breakfast buffet was very good with a wide variety of choices.
I’m not sure how this hotel has managed to be accredited as a 5 star hotel? It may well have been of a 5 star standard a few decades ago! The hotel is very tired and run down. It’s in desperate need of redevelopment. Towels on internal stairs to soak up the rain leaking through closed windows, paint flaking on balconies, tired furniture, the activities around the walking /jogging track poorly maintained, generally looking run down. We decided to eat in the Grill restaurant. The good and service were good. During the meal there was 2 diner who was on his phone having conversations with another person with his phone on loud speaker, playing music & watching clips. All on loud! In any restaurant this kind of behaviour from a fellow diner would be classed as rude and inconsiderate. We asked a member of the waiting staff if they would kindly ask the gentleman to refrain from using his phone in the restaurant in this way. We were told that the staff member could not tell him to stop as he was the owner of the hotel! From the response this kind of complaint from a guest wasn’t unusual and had obviously happened before. We wouldn’t recommend this hotel or return there.
The staff were very friendly throughout the hotel and I he golf pro was knowledgeable and patient! The food was lovely and fresh and well presented.
The hotel building is a little bit tired in places so needs some investment to bring it up to scratch
The location and staff were very good. We only had breakfast at the hotel and that was good.
The hotel looks a little tired and could do with an uplift.
Lovely hotel with friendly staff throughout. We enjoyed some excellent food. Rooms were adequate for our needs. The golf teacher Josè was brilliant
The WiFi signal could be a bit patchy at times
Pool area and all public rooms bars ect
Back after 45 years...didn't remember that much as I was 16 then but...Penina still going strong! Seems that the hotel did not change too much. Opened in 1966 but well maintained! We loved it. Very good breakfast, friendly staff. Thanks for the provided service by shuttle bus to the beach!!
Really nothing at all. It was great!
pool area, breakfast, room.
Need to drive to the beach.
Staff were lovely it just felt like there weren’t enough of them. I’m sure they have problems hiring but all of the people who do work there are lovely. Breakfast could not have been better!
Service could have been faster but they were all excellent. Some things are a bit pricey for Portugal (compared to other areas)
The kids club and the pool and the hotel beach stand
The mattress was uncomfortable, the pool closed at 19h sharp
Friendly staff. Breakfast was good.
Cleanliness was poor. No turn-down service.
The private beach part and the shuttle that takes to the beach. The breakfast was just perfect with that variety of food and beverage.
The staff at the front desk were kind and helpful.
Penina Resort is a charming place, with friendly staff and for sure its a true golfers paradise.Staff are very professional and friendlyBreakfast are really nice to start of the day. This hotel has a great history and holds several interesting antique artefacts :- Probably its crown jewel is the Sir Henry Cotton designed championship golf course, 1st golf courses build in the Algarve, very challenging design, mostly par 4s and 5s. - Queen Amelia's piano- King Edward VII’s Snooker Table, which you can actually play on ;-)among others.
Hotel needs some renovations but should try to keep its original charm which is what makes its unique.
The pool and kids club is amazing, however some staff need training on customer service.
Some staff members are extremely friendly others not at all for a 5* hotel. Checkin takes very long!

A beautifully situated, comfortable, spotless hotel. Friendly, welcoming, helpful, charming staff. Delicious food. Wonderfully big pool. Comfortable beds. A big hotel but it felt like a cozy members club. Access to a nearby beach club on a stunning and uncrowded beach.
