Top Tips
- Secure stronger rates and better room selection by booking your Decatur hotel 2 to 4 weeks in advance. Rates often increase by up to 15% around major summer events like the Decatur Celebration and during peak business travel seasons (March-October).
- Request a full 'nightly rate with taxes and fees' breakdown before booking. Illinois and Decatur taxes add 11-13%, and parking or service fees may apply (typically $15 to $20 nightly at larger chains).
- Reserve flexible or refundable rates if visiting in winter (December-February), as weather conditions can lead to travel disruptions. Check the cancellation policy for a 24-hour window to change plans without penalty.
- Arrange airport or local ground transportation ahead. Most hotels are within 5-10 miles (8-16 km) of Decatur Airport (DEC), but shuttle service varies by property and rideshares (Uber/Lyft) are limited after 21:00.
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and the booking credit card for check-in. Hotels usually place a hold of $50 to $100 for incidentals—verify your bank’s hold-release timeline, and note some properties in Illinois are now cashless; confirm accepted payment types before arrival.
- If traveling with a pet, confirm the nightly pet fee (often $15 to $75), weight or breed restrictions, and request a pet-friendly room during booking. These rooms may be limited by floor or type.
- Request a room away from elevators or ice machines for less noise, or ask for a higher floor to access city or Lake Decatur views. Some hotels charge a $15 to $20 premium for view upgrades; travelers with mobility needs should request accessible rooms near elevators.
- Confirm core amenities match your needs: Free Wi-Fi (verify minimum speed is 10 Mbps), refrigerator/microwave, and accessible breakfast or fitness center hours. Guests with accessibility requirements should confirm step-free access, visual alarms, or other needed features before arrival.
- Prepare for Decatur’s variable Midwest weather. Summer highs exceed 85°F (30°C) with humidity, while winter lows drop below 20°F (-7°C); pack rain gear June-August and insulated boots December-February.
- Budget for standard U.S. tipping: $2-$5 per night for housekeeping (leave daily), $1-$2 per bag for bell staff, and 15-20% for room service unless gratuity is already included on the bill.
- Engage with hotel staff for current dining recommendations and local events. Request information on quieter attractions like Lake Decatur, accessible community activities, or cultural events—especially during peak weekends.
- Discover regional flavors by asking staff about locally favored diners or barbecue restaurants. Many offer daily specials under $15 and are within a 10-minute drive of most hotels.
- For family stays, request adjoining rooms or suites, and confirm on-site amenities such as pools, cribs, self-service laundry, rollaway beds, or accessible room features. Provide age or specific needs information—availability varies by chain.
- Call your hotel 24 to 48 hours before arrival to reconfirm your booking, estimated arrival, and any special requests such as late check-in or accessible room needs for a smoother process at the front desk.
- Expect car travel for most sightseeing. Hotels offer free or low-cost onsite parking, but rideshare and taxi service drops significantly after dark. Reserve a rental car or local taxi in advance if you plan to explore beyond 3 miles from downtown.
- Maintain personal safety: Use in-room safes for valuables, keep doors locked, and park in well-lit areas. While Decatur is broadly safe, use added caution in low-traffic zones or when returning late at night.
