Top Tips
- Reserve hotel rooms at least 30 days in advance during major Birmingham events like UAB football games or The Magic City Classic, as prices usually rise closer to the date and hotel availability near Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport decreases.
- Check if your hotel near BHM, such as Hilton, Marriott, or Holiday Inn, offers a complimentary airport shuttle; service may run on demand or between 5:00 and 23:00. Call 24 hours before arrival to confirm shuttle times, as schedules can change for holidays or off-peak periods.
- Verify parking policies and fees before booking. Most Birmingham airport hotels offer free parking, but some may charge $15 per night for long-term or overnight parking, which is often $15 to $25 less per night than airport-operated lots.
- Review guest feedback posted in the past 3 months on sites like TripAdvisor or Google Reviews to check for updates on cleanliness, staff service, or facility renovations. Sort reviews by 'cleanliness' or 'service' to spot trends for both major chains and independent hotels.
- Ask about breakfast and onsite dining hours before arrival. Some national brands near BHM, such as Hampton Inn, offer complimentary breakfast with gluten-free or vegetarian choices; if you arrive late, confirm if the airport food court or hotel lobby snack bars are open for after-hours options.
- Ask if the fitness room or pool is currently open and check posted hours, as airport hotel facilities may close for cleaning or seasonal repairs outside the summer months. Light sleepers may want to request a room away from these amenities.
- Present a government-issued ID and a credit or debit card in your name at check-in for a security deposit, as cash is rarely accepted in U.S. hotels. If using a mobile check-in app with a prepaid stay, some chains may allow you to skip a card swipe.
- Tipping is customary but discretionary in the U.S.: plan $1–$2 per bag for bellhops or porters, $2–$5 per day for housekeeping, and $1–$2 for shuttle drivers who help with luggage. Some hotels allow you to charge tips to your room instead of paying cash.
- Check the hotel's website or local health authority page for current COVID-19 or health guidelines before arrival, especially during flu season. While most hotel mandates have lifted, some properties may still require masks in common areas.
- Downtown Birmingham is a 10-15 minute ride from the airport hotel zone by taxi, Uber, or Lyft, with typical fares ranging $20–$25 each way. Public transit is limited, and rideshare prices may surge after large events.
- Choose a hotel with a 24-hour front desk and security, such as Hyatt or Fairfield Inn, for added safety. Use the hotel shuttle or request drop-off at a well-lit entrance if returning after dark, as airport zones get quiet at night.
- For families, look for hotels with suites, connecting rooms, or cribs available on request. Business travelers should check for business centers, strong Wi-Fi, and convenient meeting spaces; ask about Wi-Fi speed tests for those working remotely.
- Ask hotel staff for recommendations on local breakfast spots like Bogue's, soul food favorites, or breweries such as Good People Brewing, all within a 10-minute rideshare. For vegetarian or international options, try Yo' Mama's or Pho Pho Asian cuisine nearby.
- Contact your hotel before arrival to request early check-in or late check-out; Hilton and Marriott properties near BHM often honor these requests when space allows, particularly for flights outside standard check-in hours.
- Confirm accessibility features before booking. If you need step-free access, a roll-in shower, or visual alarms, chain hotels like Holiday Inn Express and Hilton Garden Inn typically provide these, but always verify specific requirements in advance.
