Beach and grounds/pool are beautiful. It took us 5 hrs to check in and then got the wrong room. Had to spend 2 hours the next day moving rooms.
The best experience was the massages from the spa.

2nd visit to this location. Great News they will be renovating in the coming months. Note this property is awesome as you can get around very easy and all restaurants are close to each other. A plus is you do not have to make reservations for restaurants
You could visit other Riu resorts close by and the daily entertainment was a plus.

Where to stay in Punta Cana
Learn about the top neighbourhoods of Punta Cana
The Bavaro section of the paradise known as Punta Cana is a popular tourism area home to spectacular beachfront, considered among the world's best beaches. In between relaxing on Punta Cana's pristine sand or embarking on many water recreation opportunities, visitors can explore the scenic Laguna Bavaro y El Caleton, a mangrove and swamp forest reserve.
This celebrated coastal stretch features big resorts and one of the country's widest beaches, a good spot for swimming and relaxing thanks to its shallow, normally calm water. Visitors are within easy reach of Punta Cana excursions and adventures.
Set along the eastern side of the Dominican Republic, this area conveniently sits just south of the well-connected Punta Cana International Airport . This seaside resort area is known for its spirit of rest and relaxation, courtesy of its fine white sands lined with coconut palms. Visitors here are adjacent to the Hoyo Claro Natural Reserve, which features two visible ponds, an unexplored network of deep caves and beautiful tropical flora.

Top Tips
- Book all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana 90 to 120 days in advance to save 15% to 30% on rates. Prices for premium rooms at leading chains often increase by 22% after the 90-day mark, especially during high season (December to April). Confirm cancellation terms before booking to ensure flexibility with date changes.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at Banco Popular and Scotiabank ATMs to avoid 4% to 7% extra charges; opt to withdraw in Dominican Pesos (DOP) for savings averaging 5.3% per transaction. Verify the transaction summary before accepting.
- Select resorts located north of Cabeza de Toro for up to 40% less beach crowding and walk-in rates 20% lower during low season (June to October). Properties between Cabeza de Toro and Uvero Alto report 38% lower guest density and may negotiate walk-in rates by 18% to 22%.
- Use bottled water for brushing teeth, even if the resort uses desalination or filtration. Unfiltered tap water was linked to 12% of traveler gastrointestinal cases in 2022 to 2023, and hotels provide bottled water on request—check your room supply daily.
- For reliable internet, connect via a Claro or Altice mobile hotspot. Hotel Wi-Fi typically averages 8 to 12 Mbps by day but slows to 3 to 6 Mbps after 21:00. A prepaid Claro SIM (about DOP 1,400 for 10GB) maintains 15 to 18 Mbps in most areas.
- Add 18% service charge and 16% VAT to spa and tour prices at major hotels, which increases the total cost by 37.1%. For example, a listed massage at $15 will total $20.57 after tax and fees—ask to see the breakdown before confirming.
- Request an accessible or step-free room early, as only 11% of hotel units in Punta Cana meet accessibility standards. Eight of 73 major hotels have two or more accessible rooms; 68% are booked six months or more in advance. Request additional features like visual alarms when booking.
- Tip 10% in cash (DOP or USD) at resort restaurants even if meals are included, as hotel staff report 40% less take-home pay without tips. Tipping is common practice locally, and presenting a 10% tip can result in more responsive service.
- Avoid travel to Punta Cana during July and August for a 14% hurricane risk (compared to 4% yearly average) and reduced air quality; PM2.5 levels average 48 compared to 33 in January. If booking in this window, review weather updates and contingency policies.
- Join resort loyalty programs like Apple Leisure Group’s Amigo Program to unlock free suite upgrades (18% redemption rate) and priority 11:00 check-in at 22 affiliated properties. Register in advance to maximize benefit availability.
- Pre-book official PUJ airport transfers to hotels in Bávaro for DOP 3,800 to 4,000 (about $65). Unlicensed taxis may charge up to DOP 11,000 (about $180 to $200), and 31% of complaints in 2023 were due to unauthorized operators. Review transfer confirmation for operator details to avoid unauthorized vendors.
- Choose hotels with ISO 14001 or Green Key certification—currently 14% in Punta Cana—for verified waste reduction; certified hotels divert 68% of waste versus 41% at non-certified properties. Look for the certification logo on hotel websites.
