Top Tips
- The Canada Line SkyTrain links Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to downtown Waterfront Station in about 26 minutes for a fraction of taxi costs (CA$4.25–CA$9.25; taxis average CA$40–CA$55, about US$31–$40). Follow signs to the SkyTrain platform in the airport’s main terminal. Consult TransLink’s trip planner for late arrivals, as frequency drops in off-peak hours.
- Choose hotels in the West End, Coal Harbour, or Yaletown for walkable access—most central sites like Waterfront and Stanley Park are within a 5–15 minute walk. These districts report fewer public safety incidents tied to open drug use compared to the Downtown Eastside. For accessible paths, confirm ramp access or step-free routes with your hotel before booking. Ask about quieter floors or blackout curtains to help manage nighttime city noise.
- Plan for parking fees of CA$30–CA$50 per night (about US$22–$36) in downtown hotels. Self-park is more common, but verify with your hotel, as valet options may affect mobility if you have accessibility needs. Pre-booking is recommended, as on-street parking is metered and limited to short timeframes, especially near stadiums and convention centers. Verify EV charging availability if you require it, as many lots restrict overnight charging.
- Vancouver hotels often have few or no guest EV chargers—always confirm Level-2 or Tesla charger availability directly before arrival. Public networks like PlugShare or BC Hydro offer alternatives near Yaletown and Coal Harbour with posted usage fees. Request guidance on charging station access at check-in.
- Summer travel (June–August) and major events prompt rate spikes, so secure your hotel at least 6–8 weeks out or 3+ months prior for festivals or marathons. Check hotel cancellation and change terms, as stricter policies can apply during peak demand.
- Expect a 5% federal GST plus municipal accommodation and facility taxes, often totaling an 8–14% surcharge on your bill. Confirm the exact tax and fee breakdown at booking, as local levies may increase for premium locations or brands. Tax-exempt stays may be available to certain travelers (such as government employees), so ask for eligibility. Request a full invoice at checkout to review all charges.
- If you rely on video calls or remote work, request a recent Wi-Fi speed test—quality can vary widely by hotel and floor. Many hotels can provide wired Ethernet; target at least 50 Mbps for stable multi-user usage. As backup, consider a Canadian travel hotspot if you plan work-critical sessions.
- Request accessible rooms and features (such as roll-in showers, visual alarms, or shower chairs) at least 2–4 weeks before arrival, as older Vancouver hotels may have limited inventory. Reconfirm specific accommodations 2–3 days out, and ask about emergency evacuation procedures and step-free public areas.
- Prioritize hotels with Green Key or EarthCheck certifications—these programs verify environmental practices in water savings, local food sourcing, and recycling. Look for logos on the hotel’s website and ask front desk staff for details if sustainability is a priority for your stay.
