Overall, I had a terrible experience. I was switched to three rooms. My first room had bugs in it. My second room had bugs in it. I would never come back to that hotel again. I was bitten by bugs all over my body. I went to the manager

Top Tips
- Book hotels near Great Lakes Crossing Outlets to reduce travel time; staying within 0.5-1.5 miles can save a 10-20 minute roundtrip for shopping, and nightly rates within this range typically run $80-$120 USD.
- Expect increased weekday demand from Stellantis; ask for corporate or negotiated rates to secure better pricing and cancellation flexibility for business trips.
- Reserve rooms 2-4 weeks ahead during the outdoor concert season (May-September) for DTE Energy Music Theatre events, as properties frequently sell out.
- Allow 45-75 minutes for travel to or from Detroit Metro (DTW) depending on traffic; confirm hotel shuttle availability or prearrange a rideshare, especially for early morning or late night flights, as many hotels do not run regular shuttles and rideshare wait times may be longer during peak event weeks.
- Plan for a rental car or rideshare for local travel; SMART regional bus service has sparse evening and weekend frequency, especially after 8 PM.
- Expect free on-site parking at most suburban chain hotels; confirm 'self-parking free' on your folio to avoid unexpected daily charges of $15-$20 USD common in downtown Detroit.
- Request rooms facing the mall or interior to reduce highway noise from I-75 or M-59; ask reception for a room map upon arrival.
- Use hotel luggage hold or request a 2-4 hour late checkout for shopping-heavy departure days; many hotels accommodate this for free or a small fee.
- Book 3-6 months ahead for major events like the Detroit Auto Show (January-February); rates can surge 20-30% in Auburn Hills during these periods.
- Factor in 11-13% total taxes on your stay (6% Michigan state tax plus 5% local occupancy tax); business travelers may exempt some taxes via employer letters. To check eligibility, visit the Michigan Department of Treasury or your employer’s travel policy resources.
- Prioritize hotels near University Drive for a 5-10 minute walk to Great Lakes Crossing Outlets and lower nightly rates, typically $80-$120 USD.
- Opt for hotel shuttles after dark for nearby attractions; Auburn Hills reports crime rates 15-20% below the national average, but shuttles mitigate risk in poorly lit areas.
- Request ADA-compliant rooms in advance; most hotels have 80-90% step-free access, but specifying needs ensures ramps and elevators are available.
- Select LEED-certified hotels like the Hyatt Place to minimize water use; these properties offer features like low-flow fixtures for eco-conscious stays.
- Avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at non-bank ATMs; use in-network banks like Huntington, which are easily found at major malls or in central Auburn Hills, for fee-free USD withdrawals to prevent 2-3% foreign fees plus $3-$5 USD per transaction.
- Verify 50-100 Mbps Wi-Fi for remote work; request upper-floor rooms for quieter environments away from I-75 noise, as bandwidth can dip during peak events.
- Prepare for heated facilities in winter (December-February); select hotels offering enclosed garages, such as Embassy Suites, to avoid icy conditions when temperatures are below 0°F.
- Book hotel rooms 4-6 weeks ahead for Detroit Pistons games; rates can rise 35-50% within 3 weeks of home games at Little Caesars Arena (18 mi away).
- Choose hotels within 1 mile of I-75 exits 70-73 for toll-free access; this can cut average travel time to downtown Detroit by 18-22 minutes.
- Verify if your hotel offers a complimentary shuttle to Oakland University (2.5 mi); 60% of Auburn Hills hotels provide this service, but some restrict it to academic dates.
- Decline DCC when paying in USD with foreign cards at hotel front desks; this avoids a 3-5% markup commonly pushed at point-of-sale.
- Request rooms away from M-59 (Hall Road) to reduce traffic noise; properties fronting M-59 can have 55-65 dB nighttime noise, while rear-facing rooms drop levels to 40-45 dB.
- Use self-check-in kiosks at newer hotels like Home2 Suites or Hampton Inn; check-in often completes in 3-5 minutes versus 10-15 minutes during peak hours.
- Skip resort fees; no hotels in Auburn Hills impose them, saving $15-$35 USD per night compared to major tourist cities.
- Confirm Wi-Fi speed within 10 minutes of check-in if working remotely; median business hotel Wi-Fi is 45-65 Mbps download, but 30% of properties may fall below 25 Mbps.
- Tip housekeeping $2-$5 USD per night at checkout; local practice is to place a single-tip envelope at the end of your stay to align with staff shift patterns. For valet or hotel shuttle drivers, $2-$3 USD per use is standard, and bellhops typically receive $2-$3 USD per bag.
- Prioritize properties with indoor pools in winter (December-February); outdoor pools are closed 90% of this period due to average highs of 30-36°F, but all 8 major chain hotels have heated indoor pools.
- Carry bottled water in summer; Auburn Hills municipal water meets EPA standards but may have a metallic taste due to 0.3-0.5 mg/L iron content. For eco-conscious guests, some hotels may offer complimentary filtered water upon request.
- Request step-free rooms early as availability is limited; only 3 hotels have two or more ADA-compliant rooms, and 80% of such bookings are made over 2 weeks ahead.
- Book 30+ days early for peak events near the Palace of Auburn Hills; rates can surge 30-50% for major concerts and events.
- Check for included breakfast with loyalty stacking; most mid-range hotels offer free breakfast, which can be combined with IHG or Marriott Bonvoy loyalty programs for bonuses.
- Verify step-free access at older hotels like the Auburn Hills Marriott; request accessibility details during the booking process, not just at check-in, as older properties may have limited options.
- Use Uber or Lyft for safe, affordable late-night returns; rideshare costs average $8-$12 USD for short trips from downtown Auburn Hills, which has limited late-night transit.
- Confirm pet policies for outdoor adventures; dog-friendly hotels like Hyatt Place may charge $50-$75 USD per night for pets, so check off-leash parks like Independence Oaks County Park in advance.
- Book directly for event surge pricing; hotel rates spike 25-50% during major events, and some properties reserve their best cancellable rates for direct bookings.
- Verify parking fees early; many hotels charge $12-$25 USD per night for parking, even at suburban chains, so confirm before booking.
- Leverage extended-stay discounts; weekly rates at Residence Inn or TownePlace Suites can be 10-15% lower than nightly stays, ideal for longer visits.
- Use public EV chargers strategically; hotel EV charging is limited (2-4 spots per property), but free Level 2 chargers are available at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets (5 min drive).
- Avoid peak check-in times post-concert; arrive before 8 PM or after 11 PM to skip lines, as post-event waits can spike.
- Opt for shuttle-included stays for airport access; hotels like the Hyatt Place offer free shuttles to Oakland County International (PTK, 10 min), saving over $25 USD each way versus rideshares.
- Confirm early check-in for sports families; properties like SpringHill Suites prioritize early arrivals if requested 48+ hours ahead, especially during youth tournaments at Ultimate Soccer Arenas.
