Beautifully furnished rooms in an excellent area of downtown Portland. Hotel staff were extremely friendly and accommodating--they provided us with an extra chair and a fan for our room very promptly.
It was located at the center of town and gave you the experience of living in Maine.
The Francis was a nice, clean hotel. 5 stars? That's a joke. Your rating system needs revision. You are falsely advertising a site.

Top Tips
- Book early for summer and fall foliage weekends. Portland hotels in the city center can fill up from June to August and mid-September to mid-October, especially during major events when rates may rise over 25%. Flexible rates and rate watch alerts help secure better deals if your dates are adjustable.
- Review guest feedback and map each neighborhood before booking. Old Port hotels sit within 300 m of key waterfront attractions and offer easy access to restaurants, while the West End provides a quieter, historic setting. Many top hotels offer complimentary walking maps or bikes for local exploration; East End gives direct access to Eastern Promenade green space and sunset views over Casco Bay.
- Check if bundled parking rates are available, as some major brands include parking and can save $20-$35 per night versus paying city lot rates. Street parking is limited; compare your options for value before finalizing downtown accommodations.
- Ask about early check-in, late check-out, or secure luggage storage, especially if arriving outside standard hours (check-in typically mid-afternoon, check-out late morning). Some hotels offer secure luggage holding for up to 12 hours post check-out; confirm in advance if you require this extended option.
- Prioritize hotels with high-speed Wi-Fi, ergonomic desk chairs, and business centers supporting remote work needs. Many front desks can loan chargers or tech accessories upon request; ask about meeting room and printing access if required for your stay.
- Review pet policies and fees—most Portland hotels allow pets, but check size restrictions and get the pet fee confirmed in writing. Service animals are covered under U.S. ADA guidelines and registered animals usually incur no hotel pet fee at major chains.
- Pack layers and a light rain jacket, as Maine weather shifts quickly. Most larger hotels offer individually controlled heating and AC, but some historic inns may have variable systems—confirm comfort features at the time of booking.
- U.S. hotels generally require a government-issued ID and a credit card at check-in for security and incidental holds. International guests should also present a passport along with their card.
- Expect local state and city lodging taxes, plus possible resort, parking, or pet fees. Ask for a full price breakdown before you confirm so you can plan for any extras beyond the base rate.
- Tip hotel staff according to U.S. standards: bellhops receive $1-$2 per bag, housekeeping $2-$5 per day (leave daily), concierge $5-$20 for special requests, and room service 15%-20% if gratuity is not included. Envelopes for housekeeping tips are available in-room or at the front desk.
- Use your hotel’s concierge or front desk for restaurant reservations and ferry schedules. Casco Bay Lines ferries leave from a terminal about 700 m from most Old Port hotels; printed ferry times are available on request.
- If planning trips to Peaks Island or other Casco Bay islands, book accommodation within walking distance of the ferry terminal in Old Port or East End. This ensures faster, step-free access for walk-on boarding.
- Wear comfortable shoes for Old Port’s cobblestone streets and uneven sidewalks, which can be slippery when wet. Some hotels offer loaner umbrellas or walking sticks; ask the front desk before venturing out in the rain.
- Reserve popular restaurants and brewery tours well in advance, as main dining venues often require bookings. Hotel staff can assist with reservations during peak dates.
- Request a quieter room away from elevators, street-facing windows, or onsite bars if you are sensitive to noise. Specify a room on a high floor to minimize street sounds.
- For winter visits, check current snow and road conditions plus any hotel-specific parking or heating policies. Note some attractions and restaurants are open limited hours off-season.
- Carry bug spray for island trips or outdoor activities in summer, as mosquitoes are common. Some hotels provide complimentary insect wipes or spray at the front desk during peak months—ask if needed.
- Families should request amenities such as cribs, rollaways, or connecting rooms in advance, and verify breakfast and kitchenette availability. If your hotel has a pool or children’s activities, check if reservations are required.
- Solo travelers should book centrally located hotels with well-reviewed 24-hour front desk service. Confirm in-room safe availability at check-in; major chains typically include safes in all rooms.
- For extended stays, consider apartment-style hotels or B&Bs with kitchenettes and on-site parking. Extended-stay properties often include weekly housekeeping and access to communal kitchens.
- Check the hotel’s website or contact the property directly for the latest cleaning, health, and entry policies, as guidelines may update seasonally. Confirm any mask, vaccination, or facility restrictions prior to arrival.
- Rely on public transit, bikes, or rideshare services to access downtown areas, as traffic and parking can be challenging. Portland Metro buses, local bike hires, Uber, and Lyft all operate here, but rideshare demand fluctuates by time of day.
- Request accessible guest rooms or step-free access if needed, especially in historic buildings that may have limited elevator service. Indicate accessibility requirements when booking to confirm room availability.
- Review hours for key museums and event venues, as many—like the Portland Museum of Art and street food carts—adjust schedules outside summer or operate only from May to October.
- English is widely spoken, and staff interactions are generally casual. Most hotels enforce late evening quiet hours under local ordinances; please respect posted guidelines.
- Portland is considered safe but travelers should secure valuables and stay alert late at night in city areas. Ask hotel staff about any neighborhood-specific safety tips.
- Immerse yourself in Portland’s culture with local seafood, a harbor cruise, or a visit to Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth. Book early for popular breweries or third-party food tours; many hotels can arrange tour partner introductions.
- Review the local event calendar for food festivals, art walks, or seasonal events before booking, as citywide happenings can impact hotel prices and room availability.
