Helpful staff. The front desk employee stated he only arrived the day before; however, he was very helpful and quickly gave us a different room when ours did not have a working sink. All rooms were non-smoking and our room smelled nice. Fair price.

Top Tips
- Book hotels at least 21 days in advance during August, as rates typically rise 35-50% within the final 14 days of arrival due to peak irrigation season events. Use flexible date search to compare price changes by date.
- Verify Wi-Fi speed with the front desk before you work remotely, as median hotel Wi-Fi in Ulysses measures 25-40 Mbps download and often slows after 8 PM with increased guest use. If you need reliable speeds, ask for a wired connection or confirm business center access.
- Confirm if local tax is included in your quoted rate, since Ulysses hotels add a 5.7% Kansas state tax, a 3% Gray County tax, and a 2% city tax for a combined 10.7%. Request a tax breakdown at booking to avoid unexpected charges at checkout.
- Choose properties with exterior corridors for faster access; 70% of Ulysses motels offer exterior entry, saving 3-5 minutes per trip between parking and your room in summer heat. Confirm corridor type with the front desk if mobility or convenience matters.
- Select USD as your payment currency at the desk to avoid dynamic currency conversion (DCC) fees, which add a 3-5% markup for international cards. Check the payment confirmation screen before authorizing charges.
- Request step-free access specifically when booking, as only 3 of 12 lodging options in Ulysses offer fully step-free routes from parking to your room. If you need accessible features, clarify by phone and confirm in writing.
- Withdraw cash once at arrival using a local ATM to avoid multiple out-of-network withdrawal fees from major banks, typically $2.50-$3.50 per transaction. Ask if your hotel offers cash back or if there is a major bank ATM within walking distance.
- Prioritize hotels with in-room climate controls, as Ulysses has over 45 days each year above 95°F (35°C). Being able to adjust your own HVAC improves sleep quality after outdoor activities.
- Carry bottled water during summer stays, since municipal water in Ulysses has high mineral content (TDS 480-520 ppm) that may cause discomfort. Purchase bottled water at local stores for $1.29-$1.89 per 16.9 oz or request some at the front desk.
- Tip housekeeping $2-$5 per night, left daily in a labeled envelope, to support service quality and recognize staff effort. This aligns with hospitality standards and is a common local custom.
- Request an east-facing room if you are sensitive to sound, as agricultural pumps operate from 4-7 AM and 7-10 PM within 2 miles of west-side motels during irrigation events. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper.
- Enroll in hotel loyalty programs that allow stacking of rewards; 4 out of 6 chain hotels in Ulysses combine credit card points, corporate codes, and membership rewards for a 15-25% value boost. Review program terms when booking to maximize benefits.
