Top Tips
- Account for Colorado's high altitude. Denver sits at 5,280 ft, while resort towns like Breckenridge are 9,600 ft. Allow 24-48 hours to acclimate by increasing water intake and reducing vigorous exercise. Many hotels offer hydration stations or complimentary bottled water at check-in; some also have oxygen bars or in-room humidifiers to support guests adjusting to the altitude.
- Monitor wildfire smoke during May-October. Check the Air Quality Index (AQI) via AirNow.gov before arrival and ask hotels if rooms have recirculating HVAC or HEPA units to help with indoor air quality. Upscale hotels may provide air purifiers or share air quality updates at check-in; ask about available air quality amenities during your stay.
- Book major ski-holiday weeks far in advance. Reserve hotels 3-6 or more months ahead for Christmas-New Year and Presidents’ Day weeks at ski resorts to ensure availability and better rates. Many Colorado ski hotels offer early booking perks such as complimentary ski storage or resort credits for those dates.
- Confirm all resort fees and service charges on booking. Many mountain properties add daily resort or facility fees ($25-$50 USD/night) for amenities like ski storage or shuttles; clarify exact charges before finalizing. Some hotel loyalty programs may waive or discount these fees for members, so ask about loyalty benefits.
- Expect variable mobile/data service in mountain valleys. Cellular coverage may weaken in narrow valleys, so download offline maps and bring a power bank (above 10,000 mAh) to maintain device power. Major hotel brands typically provide free WiFi for loyalty members; confirm WiFi quality or business center availability for backup connectivity.
- Check local parking and snow-removal rules in winter. Mountain towns enforce overnight street parking bans; verify hotel versus municipal parking rules to avoid fines or towing during snow events. Many hotels offer onsite covered parking or valet, and some provide complimentary snow removal from guest vehicles or heated parking garages.
- Confirm indoor heating type and carbon monoxide (CO) detection if your room has a gas or wood fireplace. Ask the hotel to verify working CO and smoke alarms with documented maintenance for safety. Many premium hotels perform quarterly safety checks and can provide proof on request or outline their emergency response procedures.
- Plan for Colorado's dry climate. Tap water is potable, but expect low indoor humidity, especially from November to April. Drink 0.5-1 L more water per day than usual and consider bringing lotion or requesting a room humidifier. Many hotels also provide hydration stations in the fitness center or offer aromatherapy kits or spa access for guest comfort.
- Expect mountain road delays and check CO DOT conditions, as major passes can close due to snow or avalanches. Check cotrip.org the morning of travel and allow 30-90 minutes extra drive time into ski valleys. Some hotels offer real-time shuttle or traffic updates via app, and certain properties arrange alternate transportation during severe closures.
- Verify hotel accessibility features in advance for historic properties. Many older mountain lodges predate ADA standards, so request exact accessible-room specifications such as step-free entry or roll-in shower size and get written confirmation. Ask about temporary accessibility aids like portable ramps or visual alarms, and note that major hotel brands are more likely to provide compliant accessible features.
