Good budget accommodation, with nice rooms with ample en-suite bathrooms. Hostel like in many ways - creative use of the former care facility.

Inability to pay with credit card.

Very good price, peaceful location and handy for the town if you have a car

The property is a former old people’s/retirement home with seemingly no changes having been made before offering the rooms to travellers which made us feel quite uncomfortable. Kitchen facilities were unusable with no other means for making hot drinks etc.

On site parking.

There was nobody around to provide the WiFi password, should be mentioned somewhre in the room at least, and with the scorching weather, there wasn't a fan available in the room, small fan will be an added comfort for resident.

The price.

Ni toilet paper. The dish soap in shower had mold and old slimy soap in it. Long termtenants coming to knock on my door.

I didn't fully grasp that the Hikurangi Stay place was a residential home for the elderly that closed in 2012 for financial and EQ strengthening reasons when I made the booking. Little has been done to it since then and you feel as though you're staying in a hospital room. Honestly it was a bit depressing, no bedside table or facilities, stark and dim décor. Its got some serious leaks in the roof and the walls are paper thin.

Handy location, friendly hosts and clean and quiet and great price.

Not much… initially thought it was cheap and good value for money, but changed our minds pretty quickly…

We were told that this used to be a retirement home. The whole place was a dump and felt like the hotel in The Shining. Ceilings were leaking, the shared facilities were dismal (especially the horrible kitchen), and the room we were shown into was at the end of a really dark corridor. When we went into the room, it was just… creepy. We hightailed out of there and booked another hotel pronto.

This was not a Queen deluxe room,no way..It was a standard dated room ,No T.V no extras at all.1 small bar of soap supplied.No daily room service.In fact from you arrive U can see the place is neglected inside and out. The old lounge area has a 20yrs old T.V sitting not working.I would not recommend this place for any single woman travelling.I am told in town it has homeless people staying .No great surprise..Advert is very misleading.Booking .com need to remove this from their listings.

I stayed here 12 months ago and liked it. Your gear is safe and you get a room rather than a dorm which is a real bonus. It's not a place for trendies but has good facilities and great outdoor spaces.

Loved the historical features and the history of the building it self. The location is so central but quiet and lovely grounds.

We loved the light in the room and the quiet area.

The bathroom, everything got wet from the shower curtain not being long enough.

Good communication for the self check-in.Very friendly hosts with great advice on places to visit or where to eat.Beautiful and comfortable room. Well stocked shared kitchen.

Good location and very quiet.

Shared kitchen facilities are a bit tired. Could do with some local news in the rooms (attractions, restaurants etc)

The location was great. Very easy to get into town and explore. There was FREE parking on site. There were electric blankets on your bed. The bathrooms were huge because this used to be a retirement home. The manager on site was great. There is a community kitchen for use and refrigerator. They have free wifi that wasn't bad.

This is just a no frills place to stay. Dorm room style with your own private bath. It gets rather noisy there with people coming and going at odd hours that you can hear. So as long as you know this and don't expect much but a place to lay your head down for the night, it's fine.
