About
Set amid the shops on Alton's main street "Not to be confused with Alton (the home of Alton Towers) in the Midlands" the Swan Hotel is a historical building that dates back to 1377. It offers a free car park, full English breakfasts in the modern restaurant, and free Wi-Fi. The comfortable bedrooms with attached bathroom come with a TV and tea and coffee facilities. The restaurant serves a varied menu until 22:00, every day. The bar and lounge offer bar meals, cask ales, premium lagers and fine wines. Swan Hotel is less than 2 miles from Jane Austen’s Cottage in Chawton. The cottage is where 'Sense and Sensibility' and 'Pride and Prejudice' were written. The Watercress Train Line runs from New Alresford to Alton and is home to Thomas the Tank Engine.

- Our room was fantastic, very spacious, the beds were extremely comfortable and we had nice big towels. The lady on reception was really welcoming and friendly. A great stay all round :-)
- A nice clean hotel with friendly staff especially the young lady on reception
- Fantastic location, huge room, great breakfast, friendly staff and parking on site
Cons -
- Bathroom shower needed some update
- You can hear people talking and walking a bit too loudly, but keep in mind that it is an old building. Anyway, I could sleep quite well.
- The noise of others simply walking past, slamming doors and what sounded like jumping/running around at 1.30am. We didn’t have a good sleep at all. The room were also very warm. We aren’t light sleepers either.

Weather
Breakfast was very good baked beans would of been nice if they were hotter. Very welcome staff
When you buy a drink from bar it would be nice if you didn't have to pay extra for a little extra lemonade a extra £1.68 thought is was a bit much. Could have brought a glass of lemonade for not much more.
The room and the staff were very good
Food just a tad expensive
Breakfast was good and room was clean
Hotel is looking very tired, could do with decorating. Shower ok but hard to set temp as it’s up and down and low pressure
Breakfast is fine
Shower drain was smelly, switch for heated towel rail was broken, general condition and cleanliness is degrading with each visit (we typically visit +/- 2x per year for the last 15 years or so)
Great location, excellent parking, the food was fantastic and the staff were so accommodating.
We couldn't stay longer!
Location was good for the stay
Poor heating. Room was cold and small fan heater provided. No toilet paper, had to ask and lots of mold around bathroom window. In need of an uplift
Good location, good room size.
Heating was turned off before getting there room was freezing
Bed was comfortable.
The lighting in the room was very poor, especially at the mirror above the desk, to dim to use the mirror. Noisy in the morning when people walked pass load noise from the floor boards. Room was to warm even with the radiators off. The window couldn't be opened very much.
Lovely ground floor room. Great location.Reception staff very helpful and friendly.
We tried to get dinner but were told we had 6 minutes as the restaurant closed at 8pm. Signs said 9pm on Sunday. Website says 8 :30, so I'm very disappointed.I tried to order a drink at the bar, waited well over 5 minutes and there was no sign of a staff member so I had to go and find someone. Three staff were working but no one was at the bar.Not a happy bunch of people not a smile or thank you between them. It's a shame as a lovely hotel.
Really good value breakfast.
Breakfast pastries a little style. Corridors to room 9 very tired.
Very organised extremely clean we were very welcomed
The staff were wonderful, from start to finish, check in, restaurant and allin between. The hotel - Old buildings have lots of character, and this is no exception, enormous spaces, and exquisite architecture. The rooms, are huge by modern standards, comfortable beds seating. Bathrooms clean and functional.Overall, although we only stayed one night we had a wonderful stay. The restaurant staff, service and food were top class.
Nothing of note
Non
Got into the room was cold we manage to put up the heater and small floor heater
We found bed/pillows very comfortable and should have resulted in a good night's sleep, but unfortunately room temperature was excessively warm for that. Shower was easy to manage with good water pressure. The continental breakfast was excellent value and offered a good selection of options. The hotel is so central and perfectly placed for local buses.
The central heating throughout the hotel was uncomfortably warm, although thankfully staff must have been aware of this as our bedroom window was open on arrival and never closed during our stay. It would have been better if there was a separate switch for the (noisy) bathroom fan so as not to disturb other guests. Unfortunately there were quite a few instances of torn wallpaper and peeling paint on doors which detracted from the overall impression of the hotel.
