About
Greywalls Hotel is located on the edge of Muirfield’s championship golf course, on the 9th and 18th holes. There are ample gardens, tennis courts and free Wi-Fi. The onsite Chez Roux restaurant offers a blend of classical French cuisine and local Scottish produce. Built in 1901, Greywalls now offers elegant bedrooms with attached bathroom. Most rooms have views either over the Firth of Forth, or across the gardens and farmland. The walled gardens feature a croquet lawn and there are 10 golf courses within 5 miles of Greywalls. We’re closing the doors for a while as Greywalls gets ready for its next chapter, reopening in Spring 2027 as part of the Marine & Lawn Golf Hotels collection, bringing a new take to the hotel while keeping plenty of what makes this place so special. In the meantime, if you’re heading to East Lothian, we invite you to make Marine & Lawn North Berwick your base for exploring the coast or getting out on the links. We’ll see you back at Marine & Lawn Greywalls in Spring 2027.

Pros +
- Location and facilities were just what we were looking for. All food and drink was to be expected for a hotel at this price range. A nice, cosy, boutique hotel. We enjoyed the country house hotel vibe.
- Poor
- It’s quiet and sophisticated. No bling at Christmas.
Cons -
- The Hotel has a lot of old-house charm, maybe a little dated in some areas (but still clean). We know the hotel will be upgrading the facilites soon.
- Unexpected and disappointing in a 5 start hotel to find (i) no hot water in the bathroom basin, (ii) a very unstable WC (iii) having to crouch on the floor to use the kettle, and just generally at least 10 years overdue for upgrading of the bedrooms. It is difficult to think that the bedrooms were part of the same hotel - the front of house was immaculate, staff were kind and helpful, breakfast was very good, but I would sacrifice sliver service and white napkins for breakfast, in exchange for a bathroom hot tap that worked, a shelf for toiletries, a mirror that I didn't have to squat in front of to see myself, and more than one teabag on the hospitality tray. This was a very small single room, but it may be different in other rooms.
- Nothing. Have been going there for 50 years

Staff were super friendly, nothing was a problem, beautiful hotel with every detail thought off. Location was lovely, rooms were so clean & food was exceptional.
Beautiful property in a stunning location. Staff exceptionally friendly, considerate and helpful. Felt like a home from home.
If I had to say something I’d say a bit tricky to navigate but that’s part of the attraction of a historic property of this type
Great staff (100%) - comfortable and relaxing (100%) - Good food (90%) - Breakfast was fine, but there are better (80%). Gardens are beautiful and very well kept. Love the library - don't ever change it.
Breakfast was OK, but we always measure against the green Park at Pitlochry which was the best ever encountered. Limited cereals - why? Slightly skimpy on bacon and black pudding. Still good though
Beautiful location and a wonderful old feel to the hotel. Good range of food at breakfast. The single rooms seem to have been slightly upgraded since my last stay with new bathrooms.
Lack of options for dining in the evening and always filled with loud American men droning on about golf!
Amazing country home with so much history snd laid-back exceptional surroundings. The staff, especially Kate, really made our stay fun and bespoke. The restaurant and chef were so spot-on and it was overall a great escape from the hustle and bustle in a place that feels like home (but with a much better garden!)
The cottage lodging has only stairs leading up to it which could have been a problem for a guest with mobility issues, but we enjoyed the privacy and little walk to the main building!
Very good
Staff were less attentive than they used to be. We had to wait a long time in the library before dinner to be offered drinks/menu.
The breakfast was O.K. The location is excellent quiet and adjacent to one of the most famous Golf Links in the U>K.
I resided in a small cottage outwith the main hotel. Accommodation as expected
The views, the room and the food
The hotel is a beautiful Edwardian house with a lovely garden and location overlooking the famous Muirfield golf Course with views out Fife. There are lots of different reception rooms so you can choose if you want to be quiet or sociable. There are lots of interesting photos and pictures with history of the hotel and golf memorabilia. the house has real character and kind of hugs you!
A home away from home. The staff are so friendly and helpful. The food at Chez Roux was exquisitely prepared and wonderfully served.
Not a thing !
This property was perfect. We were visiting the golf next door which was within short walking distance. Our stay in the hotel was lovely, everything was to a very high standard and the hotel manger was beyond professional and welcoming.
The only thing that slightly let it down was the breakfast staff the next morning, they were slow and we had to keep getting their attention. But the food very nice so we didn’t mind too much.
I have stayed in some beautiful places around Europe and America, some swanky and some glitzy. This place has that lived and loved in home feeling with playfulness and joy in its surroundings.Never has a place captured my heart like here, haste us back. Thank you to the family that has preserved that homely loving environment that we played in and experienced so much joy in.
Breakfast tasted excellent, portions were for children. Not great before playing golf for 4 hours
We have stayed a number of times, as family lives close by. However, wonderful location for a relaxed holiday. Always love it
Restaurant very quiet in the evening.
Comfortable yet formal; the important things eg linen tablecloths but without being stuffy.
The receptionist upon our arrival seemed to feel a need to entertain us but we had been on the road since 5.30 am and all we wanted was to get to our rooms, make a cup of tea and unwind.
Very classy and traditional style
Dinner menu was limited and somewhat pricey
The cottage setting.
The walk over gravel to the house - at dusk after dinner.
