Pros +
- We liked this very traditional, charming, small hotel with personable staff. They made our short stay very comfortable. It's located within a short walk to the Gullane Golf Club. My partner, who doesn't play golf, was comfortable in the cozy sitting areas while I was out playing. Breakfasts were excellent.
- The Mallard is a lovely, cosy, rural hotel with lots of charm. I arrived after a long day's travelling and was met with a very warm and welcoming reception, who checked me in quickly and got me settled. The hotel is a few minutes walk from the main street where there are lovely cafes, restaurants, shops and about a 10 minute walk to the beautiful Gullane beach. The breakfast was hearty and all the staff I met were friendly and helpful.
- The bar and restaurant were cosy and welcoming with stunning views. Staff were quick to welcome us and provide seating and menus. The dinner was exceptional. Steak cooked perfectly and fresh haddock battered in the kitchen.
Cons -
- It would have been nice if there were a couple more self serve options at breakfast, scones/bread, fruit salad. The hot breakfast was substantial so this is a very minor comment.
- No lift as took my 81 year old aunt and didn’t realise there was no lift.
- No complaints or suggestions. Was a great place to stay

Super friendly staff, delicious breakfast and great location to attend the Fringe by the Sea festival.
Lovely location.

Great location and very clean. Food was excellent too.

If you are visiting Gullane to golf, you could not ask for a better location. The hotel is literally across the street from the course. I am not a golfer but chose to walk the course with my husband so that I would not miss out on the breathtaking sea views. Later that evening, we also took a stroll to the beach, which was lovely. We ate dinner at the Mallard and my husband's duck was one of his favorite meals in Scotland. I had the fish and chips, which was very good. Breakfast was also cooked to order and plentiful.
We ended up in the room for disabled travelers which was the only room on the ground floor and had a large window view of the parking lot (and a huge, odd ensuite bathroom). We would have preferred to be in an upstairs room. I will cut them some slack here because we arrived early in the day (much earlier than check-in time) so it is possible that they gave us the first available room to be accommodating. All in all, it was a very pleasant stay in a pleasant location.
Location was perfect for fabulous beach and golf course and lots of walking. Breakfast okay; could have supplied granola, muesli and fresh fruit.
In a great location with an efficient approach to guests.I had an excellent meal in the bar and a superb breakfast in the restaurant.Room facilities were very well appointed.
Fantastic location. Great Room, amazing view.
Great location. Friendly staff and nice ambience in bar area. Good, freshly cooked breakfast.
Room smaller than anticipated but adequate. Could hear other guests moving about and those in adjacent room. However, was quiet otherwise.
The bedroom was spacious and beautifully furnished. Staff were friendly, and the breakfast was very good.
My only complaint is that the duvet on the bed was far too heavy and hot for the room, even though I turned the radiator off.

The terms and conditions of the "Breakfast and Dinner" option was not made clear on booking.com nor made clear by the staff serving us at Dinner. First night we were told it was a £35 per person allowances by restaurant staff. We already pre-purchased drinks from the bar early to drink which was fine and paid for the excess of food we had. The next evening, we decided to order our soft drinks (no alcohol) with our meal and made sure it would cover to the cost of £35 per person allocation. We asked the waitress if our total bill was covered by the allowance and were told it was and left. On check out, we were surprised to be asked to pay for our soft drinks from the 2nd evening as these were not covered by the "dinner" deal. It is food only and not "dinner and drinks". We explained what we were told by the serving staff, and really could have enjoyed a dessert as the allowance was not met. We didn't have any alcohol but a soft drink each. We paid up and checked the hotels website and booking.com but could not see this stated clearly. However, for breakfast, the coffee/ tea and juices seem to be covered by the deal. It would be good to highlight this more clearly on check-in (which did not happen), by the serving restaurant staff, and in the booking confirmation/ website.
Peaceful location yet close to village of Gullane
No real negatives. We were allocated the wrong room type, but this was quickly rectified.
Great location, great showers in the room
Rooms ok but not massive.
Beautiful location with fantastic outdoor area for food and drink. All day sunshine. Food was really good, we had both dinner and breakfast. Faultless.
Location, friendly staff and general atmosphere were all excellent.Dinner in the restaurant was also good value.
I was slightly disappointed that such a nice Scottish hotel, did not have porridge as an option at breakfast.
Great location for golf, pubs and some stunning landscapes. People were friendly and the food was good (incl. breakfast). We had a four legged friend in tow and the staff couldn't have done more to accommodate that. Fantastic hotel.
The food was excellent. Well cooked and fresh. Breakfast was lovely, freshly cooked and superb portions. Our room was in an ideal situation with easy access to outside with the dog - who was very welcomed! The staff were, without fail, friendly and welcoming.
I think the only thing that was a down side was the beds which were pretty firm!
Everything. The hotel has an excellent vibe. The food and bar service was tremendous. The room was clean and extremely comfortable and breakfast was great. We will return.
We only stayed one night.
