Pros +
- Tartan rugs/paintings, Scottish themes
- Local staff which makes a difference as most other Scottish highland hotels have foreign workers now. It is good to employ locals as people travelling from abroad want to hear Scottish voices just like when we are abroad we also prefer to be dealt with by locals.
- The hotel building itself is pretty interesting with its Scottish Baronial style with castellated turrets and gables. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The reception area could use a little refresh but on the whole, it was okay. The reception staff was very helpful and recommended a nearby Chinese restaurant for our dinner. The food at the Li King restaurant was pretty good. The staff there were very nice and helpful too. The restaurant was just a short walk from the hotel in the nearby village. There was a fountain in the village that was visible from our room. We could hear it too with our window cracked open slightly. That was kind of nice. The included breakfast was very good.
Cons -
- Stairs needed vacuumed, very messy.
- The wall beside bed had some staining from water or liquid which should be cleaned up. The room itself was very good.
- It's a fair-sized hotel and I thought the parking was not that well signed. But we found our way to the reception desk so no big deal. Overall, it was a good stay.

The location is ideal and the general hotel is really good. The breakfast are was well stocked and for such an old hotel it is in really good condition. Very spacious and comfortable
This was our second stay here and we certainly had one of the better rooms last time. We were in a different part of the hotel which defintitely needs a lick of paint. Beds were perfectly comfortable and room was spacious, but bathroom is very dated and we found it really bizarre that there is a shower but it isn;t mounted to the wall and there was no shower screen. Literally had to hold the shower above my head and try not to flood the place.
Overpriced, underwhelming, unwelcoming, disappointing.
My husband and I stayed at the Highland Hotel in July 2025 as part of a two-week trip across Scotland. During this time, we overnighted at 10 different properties ranging from high-end hotels to guest houses. Unfortunately, we found our stay at this property to be one of the most disappointing experiences of the entire trip. We arrived at approximately 5:00 p.m., right behind two bus tours. We made our way through the groups check-in, only to discover there was no separate desk or check-in lane for individual travelers. After a lengthy wait, the front desk attendants shuffled some papers while continuing their conversation without acknowledging us. We were then handed a key and pointed to the staircase to move our luggage up. There was no information offered about the property or our stay. When we inquired about dinner options at the hotel, we were told to avoid the hotel restaurant as it would be a long wait due to the tour groups and that we should try the local deli in town. Similarly, our inquiry about breakfast at the hotel was met with a vague suggestion to "look into the dining room" - again, with no further guidance or assistance. As a result we barely spent any time at the property, except to try to get some sleep which was impossible. The room itself did not meet expectations. Most concerning, was the noise level. Our room was located in front of the stairwell and elevator, which were accessed through two heavy swinging doors that squeaked loudly and slammed shut every time they were used (both issues that should have been easily be repaired). This continued late into the night and began again early in the morning as other hotel guests moved about, making restful sleep impossible. Given the rate we paid, we expected much better. I followed up with the front desk manager but have never received a reply.
Staff were very helpful and very welcoming. Room was lovely size with views. Great location to visit surrounding areas
Thought room would b cleaned every other day as we were there 5 nights it was only cleaned once. Room could do with a little bit more attention to detail when been cleaned.
Location and value
Not being able to get something to eat, as we checked in there was a notice saying, if you haven't booked for dinner unfortunately we are fully booked and basically tuff. I wasn't happy
Very friendly and welcoming staff. Nice building with large staircase and reception area - felt like Scotland.
Rooms/floor lacked insulation so could hear people in other rooms and the entertainment (singer) on the ground floor, though was able to get to sleep. Parking seemed a bit limited so if arriving in the evening etc you may struggle to find a space out front.
Hotel was clean
Food and service was terrible - eat out if you're staying here
The architecture and the serenity, view from room is very good
Room access cards were not working, had bees in the room, lift is so old that is almost no point having, scarcity of staffs
Looks great and good location
Old, worn and no insulation. No one even bothered using wd-40 or so into doors which ALL creaks like HELL.
Good location, clean rooms and good restaurant
The downstairs bar and reception areas are still grand and the staff were nice
The room we stayed in seemed a little neglected but I can imagine the costs of running this place don't leave a lot for renovations!!! I hope at some point the Highland Hotel can return to its glory days ?
The staff were lovely, and nothing at all was too much bother. Breakfast was great.I had my 2 dogs with me, everyone was great and really accommodating.
Its really old property
Mattress was really bad and not at all comfortable. The window was not opening fully and informed recewIt was literally too hot
Great location, in its heyday would have been a fine building, but it’s a little tired now. Great hospitality. Great dog friendliness.
Was a bit tired and the bed was way too small and very uncomfortable.
Great staff, very helpful but overworked. See my negative below.
We were advised by very good staff to avoid 7am and 8am breakfast because of coach parties. No problem we came down at 8.30 to find half of food missing, had to ask for coffee mugs and cutlery, no tables reset! The food was cold and had to ask for plates, none left in the turned off plate warmers? This was unbelievable considering there was still an hour of breakfast left to go. And it’s not surprising really when you have 3 young girls with no leadership trying to maintain a breakfast service.
Excellent sized room, fantastic view, perfectly clean, good staff and just a perfect stay for our needs
Showing a few signs of age in places and shower wasn't the best albeit perfectly warm but nothing they was overly off putting
The room, ensuite and bed were clean and comfortable
The room was a single and very small and the bathroom was very dated. Carpets very very worn but overall the room and bed were clean and comfortable
Food was very good we were booked DB&B good choice in all three courses. Room was adequate, having the dogs with us we did not expect a superior room.
Cant think of anything we didn't like
