About
England’s oldest hotel (from 1220) in England’s first capital offers quintessentially English service and hospitality. Experience levels of service that you would find hard to better anywhere in England. The highly rated Old Bell, reputed to be England's oldest purpose-built hotel, is adjacent to the famous Abbey in the historic town of Malmesbury, on the edge of the Cotswolds, 5 miles from Junction 17 of the M4 motorway and near Chippenham. The Old Bell is steeped in character with log fires, paintings, stone-walls and period furniture. The bedrooms are individually furnished: those in the main house are more period in character, some with beams and fireplaces; those in the Coach House have a light and airy feel to them. Please note that when booking 5 or more rooms, different policies and additional supplements may apply.

Pros +
- Hotel was nice and good location
- Lovely old hotel with beautifully furnished rooms. High quality freshly cooked breakfast. Great Location and friendly staff
- Breakfast was exceptional. We asked to move and were actually upgraded to a fabulous room, which was airy and had a much bigger bed. We thought the rooms were well stocked with Dyson hair dryers, a lovely touch, and fab coffee, and the latest state-of-the-art kettle. Very quirky decor, and overall loved the hotel, service, and Location.
Cons -
- Unfortunately the food wasn’t up to a good standard e.g cold steak and sweet with loads colouring and E numbers !!The breakfast unfortunately came out with slight cold poached egg and toast was hard nails !!
- Car parking in short supply and was sent the wrong way by the location finder. But minor point - otherwise nothing.
- my initial room was very stuffy and had a slight smell, the toilet was minute and hard to get in and out, the bed was a double but too small. Once I shared this they upgraded us which we did pay an extra £60 for which was well worth it

design, decor, facilities, food
parking is small and the other one is a little walk away, would be good to know where to park ahead of the travel
It was warm and a welcoming space. It's an interesting building with creative decoration. The quality of the restaurant is good.
I'm elderly and I found the reception staff polite but not really interested in the customer. I phoned ahead about the car parking and really needed to know that I should look for the road beside the Inn. I was not told this. The server in the evening was exceptionally helpful though. I liked my room but did report the malfunctioning shower and loose shower clip.
Room was beautiful, spotlessly clean, warm, bed very comfortable.Tea and coffee facilities in the roomToiletries were lovely, you can purchase these from reception to take homeDinner was excellent with al a carte or lounge menu, you could also choose to sit in either the restaurant or lounge to dineBreakfast was again excellent, lots of choice of both continental and hot foodStaff were absolutely lovely, very friendly
Nothing at all, this hotel has got it just right
The location, the decor, the staff and the food.
Delicious evening meal and breakfast. Very helpful and welcoming staff. Lovely atmosphere
Nothing to dislike
The staff were all smiling Nothing was two much trouble for them and they were more than helpful. I have never had nicer bath towels in any hotel. So very soft and white!
Only one thing. The state of the washbasin in our room
The hotel had a great location, literally a 1 minute walk to the Abbey and a 2 minute walk from the high st. Our room was amazingly spacious and very quiet. Thought breakfast was great. The reception staff, bar staff and serving staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel had really good decor, and there were two bars, the main bar which had lots of nooks and cranny’s and a ski lodge theme bar.
It was quite pricey
Overall, our stay was very enjoyable. The building itself is stunning, and we were pleasantly surprised with a complimentary room upgrade and a free glass of bubbles on arrival, which was a lovely touch - thank you! The hotel is very accommodating to dogs, and we would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a cosy break with their furry friend.
There are a couple of areas that could be improved. We had dinner in the restaurant one evening, and unfortunately the wine list was quite limited and expensive. Additionally, when we came down for breakfast on both mornings, we had to sit in the lounge with our dog and found the service to be slow - on each occasion I had to go and ask to place our order.
The location was great - in the heart of beautiful town. Such a lovely and historic building
We also dined there. The service was very slow at times and we were even forgotten about which was surprising as although the hotel itself was very busy, we were only two of about 6 diners at the time.I haven't stayed at a hotel where the bathroom ran out of toilet roll - not even 'Travelodge' have managed that !!We hoped for better at over £300 per night and left disappointed
Fantastic interiors and staff. Lovely king deluxe room
The only small thing was the dessert in the restaurant was of a lower standard than the rest, but minor detail - it was still fantastic!
Overpriced and very disappointing.
Food offering was poor, more akin to pubfare than so called 4 star hotel. Owners have failed to rspect the age and history of the hotel. The result is tacky - lacking in style and substance. Staff, while polite, appear aimless and fail to make guests feel welcome. Such a pity.
Great location, close to multiple towns/villages. The decor is quirky and different making it very cosy, perfect for a Christmas break away
Very good location. Friendly staff. Excellent breakfast.
Room at top of stairs in annex the first on left. Old brass bedstead and frame that creaked and groaned with every movement and an uncomfortable mattress. TV high up on wall at right angles to bed totally unwatchable.
2nd time here, the hotel is just beautiful, very friendly staff and the food in the pub is excellent! We come with our dog once a year now
Nothing! Just slightly too warm in room
Quirky , lots of lounges - fabulously decorated for Christmas . Good food . Yummy breakfast
Drinks prices were on the steep side
Beautiful building, great location - good atmosphere Staff attentive and helpful.
Whilst the building and its original features are without fault, I felt some of the maximalist new decoration was not in keeping with the building and detracted from the natural beauty. eg the addition of large giraffe features is something seen in much ‘less grand’ establishments and looks like an attempt to be ‘quirky’ without any reference to the building, its heritage or its surroundings.
Lovely hotel, great lounge areas, beautifully decorated, attentive staff, free glass of fizz on arrival. Great dinner in the restaurant & very good value & lovely hot breakfast the following day.
