Pros +
- Location
- Staff are excellent and professional. So many amazing historical features of the hotel. Great room and comfy bed. Right in the heart of the town . Excellent food at both evening meal and breakfast.
- It's really a very busy pub/restaurant with no dedicated hotel staff. The heat and something else didn't work in my room so I had to move. It was fine, comfort-wise, but a hassle trying to get help from extremely busy staff.
Cons -
- I thought the Coffee was dreadful. And I did not like the half a raw tomato with my full English breakfast.
- The only thing is that next time I would request a room on the back to avoid the road noise.
- Functioning heat, dedicated hotel staff.

Lovely hotel staff friendly and room spacious bed comfy
What a fascinating, interesting historic hotel in the heart of the city. It was very comfortable. The staff was very friendly.
We liked the ambiance, free parking, and continental breakfast. The staff was very nice.
There was a smell, likely due to the age of the hotel.
Historic hotel in the centre of town ,a bit on the expensive side for food but there are plenty of places to eat and drink within walking distance . Large carpark behind the hotel .
The restaurant and bar prices were more expensive than just about everywhere else in town .The hotel could do with quite a bit of TLC .
Great breakfast and helpful staff
Hotel is superbly located, near main monuments and high street. It is attractive outside and was the scene of interesting historical events but the furnishings in the rooms and corridors are clean but tired.
Very friendly and accommodating staff. Nice building and rooms. Breakfast was very good.
WiFi was poor, and no services available on a Sunday (bar or restaurant). The room was also very hot, despite the temperature outside only being 21 degrees or so.
Location, Breakfast.
Early morning noise.
Phenomenal history with amazing wood panelling, striking clocks and decor fully in keeping with its past. Anyone demanding all ‘mod cons’ might be a little disappointed but I found the dignity of this amazing place to be a very special feature of my stay.
Could have had a few more coat hangers in the room.
Manager Debbie - brilliant lady! Went the extra mile for us on both checkin and checkout - storing and moving bags and calling cab etc. - she couldn't have been more helpful! Ladies room on first floor - beautiful - spa like! Generally very helpful staff.
A few things were disappointing - not all were necessarily avoidable in an older building, that is also a listed historical building. Perhaps #1 embarrassment for me - bit TMI - sorry - was a plumbing issue when it took 8 flushes to clear (normal human waste) from the toilet. (Yes it's an old building but one doesn't anticipate that kind of embarrassment in a hotel charging 150 GBP a night - surely it's possible to improve suction?) Other issues: nothing major but limited hours for meals were mildly inconvenient - I felt for two Japanese ladies who came in for dinner at 8:05 pm to be told "sorry the restaurant closes at 8pm. - 8pm!?" A staffing problem, maybe? Breakfast only available 8:30-9:30. The last issue - no fault of hotel at all - its location in the market place is convenient but traffic was very noisy - our room faced directly on to the street - rooms facing away from the street are likely quieter. Niggles, admittedly but the hotel is charging top dollar so it would be nice if some of these could be improved....
Place has great history and the architecture is very interesting
Menu is rather dated as is some of the decor. Had a room against the road, which was really noisy right through the night and had to have the window open as the room was so hot. I only had a single room- I would definitely recommend upgrading!
Great staff, good food both for dinner and breakfast, comfortable bed. Southwell itself - which is a very special place and hotel was right in the heart of it.
All Staff very friendly and helpful. They couldn't do enough for you.
Bar was shut to everyone on the Sunday Evening and was also looking forward to having an evening meal but on the dates we choose, the Restaurant was closed.
Friendly welcome on arrival. Given all required information.Good breakfastGreat location
Bar didn't open on Sunday. No ironing board in room
Proximity to the Minster. Comfortable room, friendly and efficient staff. Excellent breakfast.
Only a minor issue . Due to the positioning of the shower screen it was not possible to access the bath taps without getting into the bath!
Loved the character and history of the hotel in a lovely town. Breakfast was very good, although some of the fruit was virtually gone when we came down at around 9:15am. Staff were friendly.
Probably needs a little updating (especially the bathroom) but no real complaints. Maybe slightly overpriced for a 3 star hotel.
Lovely staff great location and very clean.
the staff were excellent. very friendly and professional on arrival. breakfast was very nice, the only negative was our bathroom, there was a cobweb on the light that looked like it had been there for a while, room 104,
apart from the cobweb, we would return to the hotel
