Pros +
- Comfortness, cosiness and the elegant timeless decor of the hotel’s curtains and furniture and of course its interesting history. The hospitality staff were all exceptionally friendly, courteous ,thoughtful and efficient, in such a short time of our 2 nights stay I felt that I was getting to know them and was fond of them. Joshua saved us on our first night, when my sister and myself took the dog for a last walk of the day. I had overheard the lady on the reception upon our arrival, saying that the main door remained open all night, therefore we thought nothing of going out late but on our return found the door locked and slightly panicked but thankfully Joshua came to our rescue. Let’s hope that one day, God willing we can return to relive the treat of staying at the George Hotel.
- Staff friendly. Room everything you need very clean. . Breakfast quality and service very good.
- Plenty of choice on the menu. The toaster just warmed the bread on the first run but then it burnt when put through again.
Cons -
- I am not usually a cold person, despite the current cold weather, but the main sitting lounge was cold at times because of the main revolving door, I suspected. The general cleanliness of the hotel was below the standards expected although I wish to say that the bathroom in our room no.16 was spotless. Maybe the management, may I respectfully suggest, should invest in a few feather dusters and a bit of TLC.
- We didn't find fault with the service or the staff. Only problem was the toaster at breakfast.
- Nothing at all from our stay

Wonderful place, we love old historic places with a background and this has it all, great food as well and really helpful staff. Couldn’t be closer to everything and a perfect place to spend time when visiting for a night or longer we will definitely be back
Nothing at all from our stay
Old world charm in a great location
Feels very dated. Location was noisy
Staff very accommodating Beautiful roomGood foodLovely warm atmosphere
Everything was wonderful. Dinner in the lounge was cosy and the breakfast as always was well up to standard. One thing that was wonderful was that I requested Room Number 2 and the hotel was able to provide my favourite room for me. Excellent and personable.
Nothing. I liked everything.
We enjoyed the food, the staff were friendly and it's in a great location. We had a nice large room which was clean and well maintained, perfect for us and our dog.
The car chargers were out of order, I would recommend guests check in advance to make sure they are operating.
Charming, unpretentious town centre hotel with lashings of character. The friendly staff were chatty and welcoming and served first class food.
It’s central and staff are friendly
It’s dated
Great location, excellent staff, lovely breakfast.
Bathroom clean, but some drain smell.
Location perfect clean rooms lovely bar great stuff great breakfast
Brilliant location, breakfast very good with a wide choice of continental and cooked food.Staff very welcoming and polite.
Room (11) was very small. Outside, possibly near the kitchen, there was an extractor fan, very noisy and permanently on which was annoying.2 x very bright LED strobes on ceiling fire alarm pulsing every 15 seconds when all lights off in room and trying to sleep.
The room was compact but had all the amenities I needed and the location was perfect for exploring the town and surrounding areas The food was absolutely wonderful- I had the pleasure of breakfast each day and chose to have dinner there on two occasions and all meals were absolutely delicious
On close inspection it appeared a bit run down and could do with a touch up. The staff seemed to be limited and although very attentive appeared to be floating around getting different jobs done and not always where you needed them to be. No lift in the property as it is old, but going up to the third floor almost killed me every time
Really nice room, good shower and good staff that chat and engage. Good value meals and nice breakfast. Good central location for a walk around Penrith and the bonus of parking within the grounds. Good bathroom and heating in the room.
Only one thing was rubbish and that was the coffee from the machine. Like so many hotels, they have stopped serving coffee or tea at the table and it is self serve from a machine. Same issue in other hotels we visited this week.
The night porter set the high standard in professionalism and courteousness that made us want to stay another night, so we did. Rooms were a great use of compact space, but didn't feel small. Very clean and over all the way hotels used to be run, properly. All staff were awesome, food was decent and the price was great. Can't wait to go back to the George, keep up the good work.
Bacon was overcooked at breakfast, but that's literally it.
I stayed in room 41 which was great, very quiet and comfortable with a new bathroom. Breakfast was great.
Room was quite small but perfect for my needs. The bathroom was the same and had a great shower! The desk was a nice touch so I could do some work. Breakfast was great - cooked to order, freshly made was a lovely considerate touch and dinner was really lovely too.
I think if you are staying in the hotel parking should be free - but at £3 it was ok - just a suggestion.
One of the best hotels I have stayed in without doubt. Ideal Location and only a 10 minute walk down to the hotel from the train station walking past the old ruined castle. Staff were plentiful and lovely friendly people, hotel was spotless, room was spotless and very cozy and warm with a lovely comfy bed and hot shower and all amenities I'm the room. The bar area was relaxing and friendly and the prices for drinks and meals were reasonable. The breakfast was excellent with a great choice of whatever you fancied with excellent table manners and service. Easy check in and checkout at 11am which gives you plenty of time to get yourself sorted before you travel home. My first stay in Penrith and I will definitely be back and definitely stay at the George Hotel again.EXCELLENT STAY
There was nothing to dislike
Carpark bar and restaurant and central of town
Residents bar should be open so you don’t have to mix with the drunks using the public bar
