Pros +
- The setting is beautiful, especially when we took a walk up to the squirrel feeding area near the waterfall.
- Beautiful exterior and grounds.
- A beautiful location. Lovely staff and dinner was very good.
Cons -
- The food at the restaurant was overpriced and very bland.
- No wifi, which they advertise. Front desk manager very unhelpful when confronted about lack of wifi. He just acted like we were crazy, even though it was one of the main reasons we booked the hotel. Also, hotel is in a 70's time warp(like The Shining)
- It’s a bit dated. We were in Room 40. However, the art deco features and grandeur of the hotel made up for that.

Right near some trailheads, a beautiful old building with large dining rooms. A touch of luxury before a hiking trip. The snooker table was a nice touch. The pub was atmospheric, and the full English breakfast was tasty.
Our friends' room (basement) had a light moldy smell and set off some allergies for me, but our upstairs room was fine. It's also somewhat far from Shap itself, so do your shopping beforehand.
Staff were exceptional and went above and beyond to ensure our stay was memorable. Lovely grounds and great red squirrel spotting! Food was decent and plentiful. Room was comfortable. Property is in a very rural location, which could probably be either good or bad depending on your point of view.
Not a dislike, but something to note for others in a similar situation. We did not realise that the property was not in Shap itself, which caused some problems as we were walking on the coast to coast path. There is no public transportation and no taxis. The hotel reception were amazing and managed to arrange for someone to pick us up. We were so very grateful and impressed that they went the extra mile to help us out.
Location was very serene. Hostess young girl worked bar and dining, was so good made everyone else look bad
Staff at registration was a bit lost.
If you are walking the coast to coast Trail, do not be fooled by the name Shap Wells hotel. It is quite a ways out of town and unless you have transportation laid on, it is a long distance to add to your walk.
Location to the Coast to Coast trail
Location was quiet and remote surrounded by a very beautiful woods and river. And of course the Red Squirrels.
Breakfast was nice. Cooked breakfast buffet, also cereal, juice, toast available. The lift was helpful so we could wheel our suitcases to our room on the 2nd floor. The woodland around the hotel is beautiful and we did see red squirrels at the squirrel feeding stations. We were glad there was room to stay but disappointed that we couldn't get an evening meal or even a bar snack. The decor is very dated, with loud patterns, possibly 1970s era.
The room was small and dated. The bed was a small double with peeling wallpaper. The shower pole was rusty. The hairdryer was a small gutless old thing attached by a curly telephone wire to its wall mount. It stopped working within 2 minutes, possibly due to overheating. The bath towels were not much bigger than a hand towel. We were glad there was room to stay at a week's notice.
Breakfast fine. Main reason for stay was red squirrels which we saw.Needs updating. Evening meals expensive & no smaller portion sizes available for people with eating full portion sized meals.Could do with more staff at busy times
As above
A great hotel that l use if riding my motorcycle around the Lakes for a few days.Very happy and helpful staff. Fabulous food too.
Not a massive issue but worth noting that our double bed was two singles joined which although comfortable isn't as comfortable as a single mattress double.
Location close to motorway.Confortable double aspect room with wonderful view.Staff were helpful after late arrival.
Poor signposting on the main road.Long track from the road heavily potholed.Hotel's once grand interior now dated.
Hotel was absolutely beautiful both inside and out. Staff were very attentive and helpful.Small issue with having to.wait about 10 minutes to book in and saying that breakfast was only served until 9 am, which is unusual in my experience, it might have been helpful to state that when I booked for a 9am sitting, that that was the last slot.I admittedly woke in plenty of time but then nodded off until about 9.20, but didn't think much of it, presuming.( wrongly), that I'd just fit in at 9.30 or so.The staff were very helpful and I got.most of my breakfast sorted which was lovely, but I'd suggest that s its unusual, that it's pointed out that 9am is the last shout for brekky.Otherwise, all was excellent. And the dark skies and total silence at night, was surreal. Definitely would stay again.
Nothing really. Just those couple of minor niggles suggested above.
Location was useful to me, quiet and pleasant surroundings, and friendly staff
Decor dated and tatty in places, approach roads heavily potholed.Food was ok but expensive for what it was, and the hotel itself was pricier than was really warranted
Breakfast was ok, and the red squirrels were everywhere
It was short staffed so could of done with extra hands , but the staff themselves were exellent
Easy access from motorway but so quiet aroundLovely walks right from hotel and Red squirrel areaFriendly staffGood food and drink options Dog friendly including bowls for him Gorgeous Victorian building
Tired decor in some areas Hotel needs more staff, we felt for the general manager who was at one time manning 3 areas, the bar, the reception and the restaurant
For a dog friendly room, we were in it was exceptional quality, clean warm, and if this was a dog friendly room, then the hotel rooms must be amazing, the breakfast was very good , staff amazing very friendly and couldn't do enough for you , I would be coming back definitely, the location was fantastic, I really can't say enough about the place, I was sceptical at first when booked and read the reviews, but honestly, they are out if date reviews as nothing like they say and I can honestly say this
Nothing, it's fantastic would 110% recommend
The Shap Wells Hotel is a gem of a place in the lake district. The room we stayed in was large. it's was booked as double but the bed was more like a king size and really comfortable. We slept really well and the sound of the stream running by was so relaxing. Food was amazing, the staff were really friendly and could not do enough for you. Place was really clean and the price was really good too. The shower in the bathroom was powerful. The red squirrel walk was amazing and they come so close to you. My partner and I loved the place and will definitely come back.
One of the roads that the sat nav brought us into the hotel by has more pot holes than the surface of the moon. It's not fair to the hotel as its owned by British rail and they won't fix it. Use the hotels private road when you are stopping though and that is perfectly fine.
a rustic hotel and the view from the room was exceptionalbreakfast was excellent plenty of varity at the hot and cold breakfast buffet
the room was a little dated but added to the ambience of the hotel
Staff were so friendly , great location . Lovely grounds with red squirrels. Comfortable rooms . Prices in restaurant reasonable, enjoyed our evening meal
Buffet breakfast - but that’s just my preference to have fresh cooked
