- Front of house staff amazing Demi, lovely building beautiful rooms
- Lovely place to stay friendly staff. Really nice rooms loved the spa bath. Bed comfortable nice bar area. Nice breakfast on the Monday because it was cooked to order.
- Location and staff very helpful and friendly
Cons -
- Service in the restaurant was terrible
- Valentines night meal. Very late coming out food wise. waited a long time for cold food. I did send it back but by time I got it back everybody else had eaten their food. So they had to wait for me. I do think they were struggling that night and following morning for breakfast which was a buffet breakfast and kept running out of things and had to queue for coffee. Think short staffed. We did get a round of drinks knocked off.
- Poor fitting blinds and bright lights outside shining in all night

Exce!lent location. Leisure club pool adjacent very pleasant.
No ventilation in room, no opening Windows or vents so inclined to be stuffy. Stayed in a Sunday night so menu options limited to pub type food
The newer suites in Rose cottage were large and spacious with a spacious bathroom and lovely large walk-in shower (could just do with some shelves on the wall for those bringing their own toiletries). Heating was lovely and warm. Blackout curtains for decent sleep (perhaps a little too dark for waking up!), and pretty good sound proofing to the outside and between rooms (in the Standard room you could hear people talking and opening doors in the corridor but fortunately the hotel wasn't too busy). We've stayed in the village before at an AirBnB and the train continously woke us up through the night, but having worried about that we actually weren't disturbed by a single train! The Standard room also came with a good sized bathroom, nicely styled in sandy stone. Pillows options were actually on the thinner side which was great as UK hotels often seem obsessed with huge hefty hard pillows that give you a bad neck and numb ears! Staff were lovely, friendly, and very helpful even when unfortunately we had to make a complaint and request a room switch. We didn't explore the facilities but the lobby was pleasant and the bar looked inviting from the lobby. Good parking. Coffee making facilities, decaf options provided at reception (though would be good if decaf teas and coffees were also left as default in the room as many people don't drink caffeinated these days). Can't recall if the welcome biscuits were vegan, they might have been and if so then fab, if not then that would be appreciated too so they are suitable for all (and also an easy quick win to contribute to hotel sustainabilility practices). We didn't have breakfast or eat at the hotel so can't comment on that.
So the complaints- we hate writing bad reviews but feel guests need to be aware, and mattresses need to be upgraded as unfortunately they were terrible. The first night we'd booked a Standard room (room itself was fine, if a little dated) but the bed was worse than sleeping on the floor and we had a terrible nights sleep, the mattress was hard (not firm) and saggy (not soft) and we could feel every last spring digging into our ribs and hips. We had to ask to switch rooms in the morning and were upgraded free of charge to a superior suite in Rose cottage, which was kind. The room was bigger (very spacious) and nicer, but unfortunately the mattress was only a bit better, not a great deal of improvement, we could still feel the springs though not quite as badly, and it was again pretty hard yet unsupoortive (not firm, love a firm mattress which is different to 'hard'). Apparently the mattresses are only 2yrs old and so must've been very cheap (and quite thin in depth), not what you'd expect from a 4* hotel when sleeping is their main business! We've stayed at 3* with better mattresses; I don't know why UK hotels in particular don't seem to invest in a decent night's sleep like European hotels do. If we'd paid for a superior rate we'd have been asking for a refund (and coming from a couple who find it very hard to complain). We'd love to stay again but unfortunately this would now be our last case scenario-hotel as we'd be anxious about not getting a decent sleep. They were also having a water pressure issue in the main building at the time (hopefully fixable) and my wife was hit in the chest by an exploding shower head which shot off with the smallest twist of the on-lever, meaning we also couldn't set the temperature properly as was one of those integrated pressure-temperature dials.

I just love everything thre was notthing I didn't like
Room and bed comfortable enough, clean enough and warm enough.
This hotel needs £1M spent on it urgently - last upgrade probably around 1990. Room single glazed, painted-over sash windows, blocked sink, rusty bin etc etc. Some renovations going on which reduced the amenity of the public areas. For supper in the restaurant I was told (because I was accompanied by my pet) to sit in the conservatory area, which was very cold indeed. Was ignored by wait staff for too long therefore I decided to leave and eat elsewhere in the village.
Demi was amazing and very accommodating. Amazing stay at the hotel. Swim, sauna, relax.
At breakfast the waiter kept singing lol. He also was clearing our table as we ate. Id prefer to eat in peace. But still top breakfast and cooked to perfection.
The room was beautifully decorated, clean and spacious. There was plenty of spaces to park your car. The spa facilities looked good, however I did not use them this time. The food (both dinner and breakfast) was of a high standard and you could tell quality ingredients were used.
I tried to check in online, it kept asking me for a photo of my ID. It did not say where this would be stored or if it was GDPR compliant - only that staff couldn't access it. The privacy policy was American and therefore not under UK jurisdiction. I wasn't even asked for ID when checking in in person, therefore I found this strange.I agreed for communication via Whatsapp about my booking and found the messages excessive.
breakfast
could not take plug out of bath, charged for breakfast we did not have, unable to open windows, kettle dirty, cracks across bedroom ceiling, no refund for no breakfast, toilet seat to small for toilet, poo on walls in reception toilet, receptionist rude. 0overall poor quality for the cost, disgusted being charged for two breakfasts we did not have. Will not stay again.
Good location for the train into Carlisle.Breakfast was great, everything from cereal, yougurt, fruit,, to a full English breakfast.Never got to use the fitness facility.
Breakfast was lovely fresh fruit and yoghurt, selection of cold.mears and cheeses or something cooked. Evening meal was excellent, generous portion sizes.
The hotel was having renovation to their bar area, so a make shift bar was available in the evening.
Close to railway station. Good swimming pool.
Bath water only lukewarm in the evening.
Position. Availability, handy for our needs
A little chaotic long winded booking in process. Not digitalised! Room needed upgrading - decoration poor. Paint all over the windows - bizarre that it’s been left like that for clearly a long time.
Great location & facilities
The heating was on full in the bedroom with no way of turning it down or off, made for an uncomfortable nights sleep. Restaurant was freezing though?! No bar due to refurbishing meant fewer options available.
Great facilities and reasonably priced
Very rude lady on reception, I stay here regularly but will not return after my experience at check-in
Lovely location
Food was very good but very limited especially when you stay more than a few nights.
Nice hotel,location and staff.
Pillows and beds were uncomfortable. Breakfast was good but evening meals was poor. Vegetables overcooked.
