About

The County Hotel is a historic, listed building with over 130 years of history. As a result, each of our bedrooms is individual in character, and room sizes, shapes, layouts, and décor may vary throughout the hotel. The images displayed on our website are genuine photographs of rooms within the County Hotel and are provided as representative examples. Not all rooms are identical, and furnishings, layouts, and views may differ from those shown. Some bedrooms are accessed via internal steps due to the building’s original design. If you require step-free access or have specific mobility or accessibility requirements, we recommend contacting the hotel prior to booking so that we can advise on the most suitable room options. Please note that our central city-center location may result in some external noise, particularly during evenings and weekends. For guest comfort, complimentary earplugs are provided in all bedrooms. We are continuously investing in the hotel, and while many rooms and public areas have already been refreshed, further improvements are ongoing. Our team is always happy to assist during your stay should you have any concerns or wish to discuss alternative room options, subject to availability.

    Pros +

    • Great location in front of the train station and town centre. Large comfortable corner room with views.
    • Location is central for shops and eateries
    • Centrally located for shops train station and eating places/bars,private carpark ensuite rooms and comfortqble beds, clean linen and towels also staff helpful and friendly..Lift useful also

    Cons -

    • The car park charge of £8 per stay was unexpected, as the hotel site and online information suggest it is free for residents. The hotel is very tired and needs a really good clean and refurbishment. One loose plug shared between the sink and bath, which didn't fit either.Noise, including creaking floors and general chatter, could be heard from other rooms, disturbing our night's sleep.
    • Everythg ok for prices paid.
    • Room was VERY dated, had a funny smell and wasnt clean

    8MichaelPosted on: 2-21-2026

    Central. Good breakfast

    No restaurant

    8MarkegreenhalghPosted on: 2-20-2026

    Cheap and cheerful

8 quid for parking and a bit noisy but earplugs were provided

    8Nobby65Posted on: 2-20-2026

Dead centre of Carlisle train station 200 yards away and recommend to anyone on a budget as I have stayed many times and never had a problem

When summer it gets hot so a bit noisy if the window is open but it's not the end of the world is it

    8MartinPosted on: 2-20-2026

    All in all a very...

The low-slung chair provided was comfortable but it wasn't high enough to sit writing at the table. I had to sit on 3 pillows to do that.

    5ItoroPosted on: 2-20-2026

The room was very spacious with comfortable beds. However, navigating to my room was challenging.

I couldn't sleep all night and had a headache from the extreme cold in the room, as the heating was insufficient. Also, carpets in some walkways appear dirty, and laundry taken from the rooms is left on the walkway floors, which is unideal for infection control. The smells in some areas were noticeable as well.

Handy to travel hubs. Pubs and restaurants close bye and 5 minutes to the city centre. Had a very pleasant stay at this property. Served my travel needs perfectly.

    8PeterPosted on: 2-19-2026

Its location, opposite the railway station was excellent. The breakfast was great value with ample portions.

    6JessiePosted on: 2-19-2026

    Really good location

Lift was not working sometimes and I have just gone knee surgery and it made it difficult when the lift would not work. Seems the staff new about this and their solution was to walk to first floor and press the button again

    9PeterPosted on: 2-19-2026

A good hotel overall EXCELLENT STAFF, near to train station.

Lift did not work on occasions.

    7MaryPosted on: 2-19-2026

Warm and friendly staff.Extremely nice pillowsGood location24 hour serviceLots of hot waterA grand old hotel, now looking a bit sad and tired, but a much better experience than a soulless chain. Will use again if in the area and needing to stop over.

I would have liked to have known the cost of the carpark before arriving (£8 /night).

Great value for money stay. Friendly, helpful staff comfortable room and bed. Warm and clean. Adjacent to the station snd city centre. Hoghly reccommended

Nothing it was a very good stay

    8JasonPosted on: 2-18-2026

Clean comfortable and cozy, decent value for money.

Long winding corridors to rooms but it's a large old building so it's to be expected, besides it adds a certain charm to it.

    3FionaPosted on: 2-18-2026

    Great location. Staff friendly.

Noisy! They actually provide you with ear plugs it’s that bad! Old and dated. No bar! Shower curtain and pole fell down in middle of night one. Fire Alarm night two! Wasn’t the best holiday.
