Pros +
- The pub and restaurant.
- Beautiful coaching inn, full of character. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Bed room was huge with a lovely en suite and big fluffy towels. Lovely choice for breakfast and meals in the evening were great.
- This is such a wonderful hotel. The staff are absolutely fabulous, well informed and can't do enough for you. The room was spacious, toasty warm and well furnished. The meals were hearty and delicious and the breakfast was lovely. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
Cons -
- The location was excellent, although it would have been helpful to hAve directions either the on the website or in the confirmation email. Or if someone had answered when we tried to call for directions. But hotel employee was incredibly helpful with everything
- No water pressure in shower made it unusable.
- There was an issue with the light in our room that made it tricky to get the children to sleep and the manager was away so unable to fix it. The staff did try their best to remedy the situation but were unable to fix it. Absolutely not their fault though!

Warm and welcoming. We had a tasty dinner and breakfast was excellent. The room was modern and comfortable but the history was still evident throughout the building.
The hotel had a lot of old world charm and character. The food in the dining room was superb! The breakfast was included in the price and it was also excellent. Not too far from parts of Hadrian’s Wall, but you definitely need a car!
Thin walls. Lots of stairs.
All the staff were lovely and helpful. Dinner in the pub was terrific, the fish and chips were the best I've ever had.
The staff, atmosphere and location. The restaurant was also exceptional.
Very thin walls, but fortunately the guests were all quiet. One can clearly hear the tv in the other room.
People, food and location were all excellent 11/10!Room 6 was small (NY City small) and not very practical. We checked in late and perhaps got the runt of the rooms - and it was a holiday weekend. We loved everything about the String, but were glad to only have to spend one night in that room
Breakfast was very nice--there were options beyond a traditional full English breakfast and I appreciated that! The inn has the character and interest you'd expect from a building that old. It is very dark in the area; we went out on a clear night and walked just a bit up the road and we could see amazing stars and the Milky Way.
There was almost no storage in the room.
Nice quiet countryside location. Plenty of parking. Very friendly staff. Lovely big, comfortable room (Room 4) with fantastic en-suite, including a big bath - perfect for two!
Water pressure in the shower was a bit feeble but adequate. Restaurant pricey but the food was good quality. Expensive drinks (£7-20 for a pint of BIrra Moretti is more like London prices!). Still a great place though.
A friendly welcome right from the start, a nice place to stay if you like good food, a tipple, and don't mind being in the countryside. I have stayed here a couple of times now and on both occasions it has not disappointed me so will continue to stay year after year.
Wi-fi not the greatest and internet speed not so fast so don't expect to stream Netflix in you room without a bit of buffering, other than that there was nothing to not like.
What a find staff were so friendly room fabulous and the breakfast was perfect we had evening meal.as well which was amazing can't wait to go back.
Nothing at all could not fault our stay
Food good but expensive
Closed during the day opened at 4pm so no food available lunch time. Also the bar was closed until 4pm the drinks were very expensive.
All the food was lovingly cooked and the proportions were generous.Location was great. easy to reach North West England and South West Scotland especially the Solway coast West of Dumfries which was beautiful'Staff - absolutley nothing too much trouble
Day time kitchen prep noise. It didnt last long but it was a nuisance
The bar staff were super friendly and provided good service. The dinner was very tasty overall the ambience was warm and cozy. We also managed to play a game of snooker after our meal which added to the enjoyment.
The room was spacious and modern but wasn’t as clean as we’d like (some old hoops / snacks under one of the beds and a couple hairs on the sheets and bathroom). The breakfast was also a little less than average.
Beautiful room. Well equipped. Bar around lovely and breakfast was fabulous. Staff were friendly and made you feel at home.
Only down side was that the rooms need to be soundproofed. We had EXTREMELY noisy neighbours that blared their tv late at night and we could hear their whole conversation. Was tempted to bang on the wall and tell them to s**t up! Didn’t get much sleep ☹️
Very clean room, good amenities and great breakfast.
Lovely decor, good service, clean and comfortable room.
Nothing worth writing about.Apart from no Yorkshire tea.
Beautiful location, lovely staff, fantastic food just couldn’t fault it!
There is nothing to dislike at all!
