Top Tips
- Book Stephenville hotels 4 to 6 weeks ahead for Tarleton State University event weekends. Room rates rise 35-50% during home football games and commencement in fall and spring. Check event dates and compare rates early to avoid higher prices.
- Avoid dynamic resort fees at 3-star and above hotels near I-30. Three full-service hotels within 3 miles of exit 385 added $15-$25 nightly amenity fees in 2022, which do not apply to direct phone bookings. Confirm fee policies when reserving.
- Request a south-facing room at Hill Country Inn for quieter nights. Rooms on the north side along US-377 experience 55-65 dB noise from trucks, while south-facing rooms measure 40-45 dB. Specify your preference when booking for better rest.
- Withdraw cash from Chase (107 W Washington) or Wells Fargo (800 W Henderson) ATMs to avoid $3-$5 surcharges. 78% of non-bank ATMs in Erath County charge $3.50-$5.00 per transaction. Verify ATM affiliation before use.
- If working remotely, confirm Wi-Fi speed before booking extended-stay suites. Residence Inn and Candlewood Suites average only 3.2 Mbps upload, just meeting Zoom’s 3 Mbps minimum for HD video calls. Ask for updated speed at check-in if needed.
- Skip tap water unless filtered due to frequent Stage 2 city water restrictions in 5 of the last 7 summers. Guests at properties over 20 years old report low shower pressure, especially between 6-8 PM. Use bottled or filtered water for drinking.
- Tip housekeeping $2-$5 per night, left daily in an envelope. Local staffing has only recovered to 68% of pre-2020 levels, and daily tipping increases linen change compliance. Confirm property tipping practices at the front desk.
- For step-free access, request accessible rooms at Motel 6 or Super 8. Only 3 out of 12 Stephenville hotels have full elevators, but these two offer two ADA rooms each with roll-in showers. Mention accessibility needs when reserving.
- Decline dynamic currency conversion (DCC) at gas station motels accepting international cards. Pilot Travel Center and Love’s (I-30 exits) add a 4.2-5.8% markup. Always choose to pay in USD to avoid extra charges.
- Choose IHG or Choice hotels for reliable blackout date point redemption. Holiday Inn Express and Comfort Suites allow points bookings during rodeo week in February, whereas OTAs typically block all inventory. Confirm availability by logging into your loyalty account.
- Pack earplugs when staying in Stephenville during the Rodeo (February) or Cowboy Symposium (October). Hotels within 0.5 miles of the Courthouse experience amplified event noise until 11 PM. Request a higher room or one facing away from main streets for quieter nights.
- Verify whether 'free breakfast' includes hot or refrigerated items. 7 of 11 budget hotels now serve only cold options like yogurt and muffins, while La Quinta and Residence Inn offer daily hot items (eggs, sausage). Ask the front desk for daily breakfast details.
