One of California's oldest communities, San Luis Obispo gets its name from the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, a historic house of worship founded here in 1772. If you have kids along for the ride, there's the San Luis Obispo Children's Museum. Halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, this is a good stopping off point for drivers along the Pacific Coast Highway. There's an Amtrak station downtown, and San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport is a 10-minute drive away.
You know when you've reached the oceanfront community of Morro Bay: jutting out from the harbor is Morro Rock, a 576-foot-tall chunk of volcanic stone that resembles an overturned serving bowl. Located where the Pacific Coast Highway juts inland for about 20 miles, this town is home to Morro Bay State Park and its huge colony of seabirds. Offshore are two marine parks that preserve the area's fragile ecosystem. San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport is a 25-minute drive southeast.
On the Salinas River, the community of Paso Robles has a lot to recommend it: world-class wineries, soothing hot springs and rolling hills covered with grape vineyards, olive groves and almond orchards. The community celebrates its bounty every year with a procession of festivals, the most famous of which is the California Mid-State Fair. San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport is a 40-minute drive south.

Top Tips
- Book 3 to 6 months ahead for summer stays to avoid 25-35% price increases in July and August due to high demand.
- Factor in 12-15% total taxes on hotel stays, including state lodging tax and local add-ons, to avoid surprises at checkout.
- Prioritize hotels within 0.2 miles of the pier for quick 2-5 minute walks to attractions, though these properties may be 10-20% higher in nightly rates.
- Confirm hotel Wi-Fi speeds if remote working. Average speeds are 15-30 Mbps, which may be unreliable for high-bandwidth tasks during peak hours.
- Request step-free access in advance when booking, as about 60% of Cayucos hotels are older buildings with potential barriers.
- Use ATMs strategically in larger towns like Paso Robles or Morro Bay to avoid $3-5 surcharges at local ATMs in Cayucos.
- Adopt water conservation practices during your stay, especially from May to October, as hotels enforce low-flow fixtures due to California's drought regulations.
