The bed was so comfortable and the shower had great pressure. I was flying out early the next morning and they gave me a brown paper bag with my choice of a few breakfast options since I would be done before their breakfast was out. Super cool!

Top Tips
- Secure your reservation several weeks ahead for peak seasons such as October’s leaf-peeping or ski season (late November-March) at Granite Peak, where rooms within 2 miles often sell out fast. For first-time visitors, booking at least 4 weeks in advance is recommended.
- Choose your area: stay within 0.5 miles of Downtown Wausau for easy museum, art center, and restaurant access, or select Rib Mountain hotels for direct access to outdoor trails and Granite Peak skiing, just 3 miles southwest.
- Check recent reviews for up-to-date details on parking, winter snow removal, and possible hallway or street noise. These can vary by property and season, especially after heavy snowfall.
- Standard check-in starts at 3:00 PM and check-out is by 11:00 AM. Request early check-in or late check-out directly with the hotel, with fees typically ranging from $15 to $30 depending on the time requested.
- Hotel shuttles to Central Wisconsin Airport (CWA) run by reservation only; the airport is a 15-20 minute drive from downtown Wausau. Confirm shuttle timing and cost in advance, as public transit and rideshare are limited, especially after 8 PM.
- Most downtown hotels include one standard-sized vehicle parking spot in nightly rates; oversized vehicles may require advance notice or incur a $15 to $30 nightly fee. For winter stays over three nights, check for added snow clearing or parking relocation requirements.
- Request details on Wi-Fi speed (typically 10-50 Mbps), pool hours (often 6:00 AM-10:00 PM), and availability of cribs or rollaways, as fees or deposits may apply for each. Pet-friendly rooms are limited and commonly require advance notice plus a $25 to $75 cleaning fee.
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and a credit card for check-in. Hotels generally place a $50 to $150 per night hold for incidentals, and state plus local hotel taxes total 8-10% on your nightly rate.
- Plan to tip $1-2 per bag for bell staff, $3-5 per night for housekeeping (leave daily), and 15-20% of your restaurant bill, aligning with standard U.S. practice in Wisconsin hotels.
- Between November and March, temperatures can drop below 10°F (-12°C); pack insulated, waterproof boots and layered clothing. Allow 20-30% extra transit time for snow and ice, especially when driving to or from Rib Mountain.
- Ask for a room at least 2 doors from elevators and ice machines, and request a side away from US-51 or Stewart Ave for reduced noise. Confirm availability, as hotel layout varies by floor.
- Explore local culture: Ask the front desk about events at The Grand Theater, supper club openings, or brewery tours, which are regular favorites in central Wausau. Event schedules shift seasonally, so confirm operating hours during your stay.
- For added safety, select hotels within 0.5 miles of Wausau’s River District that offer 24-hour staffed lobbies and secure, well-lit access. This location ensures a 10-minute walk or less to restaurants and riverfront activities.
- Families can request cribs, connecting rooms, and mini-fridges; advance requests are often needed due to limited quantities. Confirm fee or deposit amounts, typically $10 to $25 per item, during booking.
- Business amenities like conference rooms, projectors, and high-speed Wi-Fi (up to 50 Mbps) can be reserved on request; secure these 1-2 weeks before arrival for best availability.
- Nearly all hotels are smoke-free, so confirm in advance if designated outdoor areas are available. Policies on firearms and deep cleaning fees can vary; request full policy details before booking if these are factors for your stay.
- Use the in-room safe for jewelry, passports, and electronics, and keep doors and windows locked at all times. Wausau’s crime rates are low, but hotel policy advises these precautions for all guests.
- Cancellation terms typically allow free changes up to 24 hours in advance, but some prepaid or discounted rates are non-refundable. Housekeeping service may be on-request only for stays longer than 3 nights, so confirm with the front desk at check-in.
