The ladies on the front desk were super helpful and friendly...they were not militaristic about the masks. When asked they helped as best they could re: directions and familiarity with Barbados. I liked that we could take our breakfast up to the room

Friendly service. Clean rooms. Management upgraded our room but was reluctant to assist us in finding reservation for New Year's eve outside of the hotel which held its own event. With a little effort we secured a reservation at Champers on our own.

Top Tips
- Book beachfront hotels 5 to 7 months in advance for Crop Over Festival, as rates for coastal properties rise 40-65% and availability can fall below 20% within 90 days of peak dates (late June to early August). Secure your room early to avoid limited options near the beach.
- South coast hotels deliver better value near the water, averaging 360-520 BBD (approx. $180-$260 USD) per night with direct beach access, compared to 560-840 BBD (approx. $280-$420 USD) on the west. Choose the south for higher-wave beaches or the west for calmer swimming.
- Verify if your online quote includes the mandatory 10% government room tax and 2.5% service fee. Some booking sites show pre-tax rates, creating a 12.5% difference. Check your final invoice for a '10% Accommodation Tax (VAT-exempt)' line.
- Choose a hotel in Christ Church, St. Lawrence Gap, or Bridgetown for quick transfers, as 78% of rentals are within 18-22 minutes of BGI Airport. North coast hotels (e.g., St. Peter) average 45-60 minutes, which reduces your arrival and departure time by over an hour.
- Purchase a local Flow Bajan SIM at BGI Airport for faster and more reliable internet. These SIMs provide 40-60 Mbps LTE for 7 days (10GB) at 30 BBD (approx. $15 USD), while hotel Wi-Fi averages 12-18 Mbps.
- Do not assume all-inclusive pricing, as only four resorts operate full all-inclusive plans (e.g., Sandals Barbados, Sea Breeze Beach). At other hotels, meals and drinks are mostly à la carte, and inaccurate online listings may mean 25-40% extra costs. Request a full inclusion list to confirm if premium liquor and excursions are covered.
- Request step-free access in writing if needed, as only 32% of Barbados hotels list ADA-compliant features and most newer builds still have 1-3 steps at entrances. Verify your accessible room with photos and a written confirmation from your selected hotel.
- When paying by card, select 'charge in BBD' at hotel terminals instead of dynamic currency conversion (DCC). DCC adds a 4.2-6.8% markup. Carry 100-200 BBD cash for small vendors who may not accept international cards.
- Prioritize Fair Trade or Green Key certified hotels, as these properties reduce non-potable water use by 35-50% with greywater systems. This is especially important during the island's dry season (January to April), when water restrictions sometimes apply.
- Tip 10% at restaurants if service is not included. Hotel staff typically receive a 2.5% service fee built into your bill; additional tipping is discretionary. Bartenders and tour guides may expect a 10% tip unless it is already pre-charged.
- Book September to October stays for 30-50% off high-season rates. While these months fall in hurricane season (June to November), only 1.2% of storms have directly impacted Barbados since 1950 (NOAA). Ensure your hotel has storm insurance, backup power, and a posted evacuation plan.
- Use a locally issued credit card (Republic Bank or First Caribbean) or a contactless card to avoid foreign exchange fees on USD-linked transactions. International cards often add a 3% fee per swipe. Inquire about card options at airport banking kiosks.
