Top Tips
- Select your hotel based on trip focus: Zona Río sits 2-3 km (1.2-1.8 mi) from the U.S. border and suits business travelers and upmarket malls like Plaza Río. Avenida Revolución, under 1 km (0.6 mi) from nightlife and main tourist attractions, suits leisure travelers. Use hotel maps to check proximity, which can help reduce transport costs.
- Book at least 7 days ahead for Friday and Saturday stays, when Tijuana’s hotel occupancy can top 85%. Advance bookings are often 10-20% cheaper than last-minute prices.
- Read current guest reviews for details on room noise insulation, night staff security checks, and Wi-Fi speed. This helps ensure reliable service, especially if you work remotely or arrive late.
- Expect a 16% VAT (IVA) and approximately 5% municipal lodging tax, added at check-out. Confirm your total cost before arrival to avoid billing surprises.
- Bring a valid passport (for international visitors) or INE/official government ID (for Mexican nationals); hotels legally require this at check-in and will match it to your reservation.
- Request an electronic invoice (factura) at check-in if needed for business, and have your RFC/tax details ready. Mexican tax law requires advance registration for digital invoices.
- Carry MX$30-100 in cash for tipping and small shops. Major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted, but notify your bank of travel to prevent declined charges.
- Tip bellhops MX$20-50 (approx. $1-3 USD) per bag and housekeeping MX$20-50 (approx. $1-3 USD) per night in cash. Hotel staff generally prefer pesos over dollars.
- Use hotel desk staff or rideshare apps such as Uber, Didi, or InDriver for transportation. These services typically arrive within 3-8 minutes in central areas and offer tracking, while unregistered taxis are less secure.
- Stay on main avenues like Paseo de los Héroes or Calle Sexta after 21:00, especially in Zona Río, Centro, and Playas de Tijuana. Limit walking to within two blocks of main streets at night for personal safety.
- At the border, present your passport or FMM permit for longer stays, and factor in an extra 30-60 minutes for crossing delays on weekends and holidays.
- Drink only bottled water, priced at MX$15-25 per liter, and use it for brushing your teeth. Tap water is generally unsuitable. Most mid-range and higher-tier hotels provide two bottles daily; request more at reception if needed.
- Practice basic Spanish phrases such as "Hola," "Gracias," and "Por favor"; most hotel staff in tourist areas speak some English, but using Spanish is appreciated.
- Send any special requests (like early check-in, late check-out, or shuttle) by email or app, then re-confirm them by phone within 24 hours of arrival to prevent miscommunication.
- Request a higher floor and a room away from elevators or bars to reduce noise. Test air conditioning when you arrive, especially during May-September, when temperatures reach 28°C (82°F) or higher.
- Check Wi-Fi speed listings (typically 10-30 Mbps in larger hotels) and ask about staff availability for business centers or meeting rooms. Test your internet connection after check-in if speed is critical for work.
- Solo travelers benefit from hotels with 24-hour staffed lobbies, controlled entry, and CCTV coverage. Inform the front desk if you expect to return after midnight so safety protocols can be followed.
- For families, confirm connecting rooms, crib rental (usually MX$150-300 per night), and pool depth for children. Check age policies as they vary across hotel chains.
- Business guests should verify lobby printer/scanner access, in-room desk space, and breakfast hours, which usually start at 6:00-6:30 AM for early departures.
- Request local recommendations from your hotel’s concierge for Baja Med restaurants within 2 km (1.25 mi) or for taco stands well rated by COEPRIS inspectors.
- Review city event calendars for food festivals like Baja Culinary Fest or beer expos. Hotel rates can increase by 15-40% and fill up two weeks before major gatherings.
- Buy a local SIM or eSIM (from Telcel, AT&T, or Movistar) for MX$100-200 to ensure data for ride apps, maps, and safety contact when outside hotel Wi-Fi zones.
- If you experience maintenance or billing issues during your stay, document them with photos and timestamps, then request supervisor support in person or through hotel channels for fast resolution.
