We liked the clean new facility. The bed was comfortable. Everything mechanical worked in the room; seems like a no brainer but we have stayed in several nice motels where one of the lights, the fridge, the climate control, etc. did not work.

Top Tips
- Book hotels in Independence 4 to 6 weeks before the Buchanan County Fair (mid-August) or harvest festivals to secure up to 60% more room choices and avoid 25 to 40% last-minute rate increases. Consider booking flexible rates so you can adjust plans if event dates change.
- Select accommodations along the US-20 corridor for emergency readiness, as these hotels are 3 to 5 minutes from the Buchanan County Ambulance station, compared to 12 to 18 minutes for rural locations. This can be especially helpful if you have health considerations or are traveling with family.
- Confirm your quoted hotel rate includes Iowa’s 6% state lodging tax and the 2% local option tax for a total of 8%. Request a tax breakdown if you book through a third-party to avoid unexpected charges at checkout.
- Request a room facing away from the Union Pacific railroad on 2nd Street, as trains pass frequently between 11:30 PM and 1:30 AM, generating noise up to 80 dB near east-side motels. Light sleepers may want to bring earplugs for comfort.
- Use local ATMs, such as those at Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust in Independence, to bypass 3 to 5% dynamic currency conversion fees often applied on international cards at hotel points of sale. Confirm any additional ATM fees with your card issuer before you travel.
- Choose properties with verified 100+ Mbps wired internet for remote work. Holiday Inn Express, Best Western, and Super 8 are the only Independence hotels meeting this standard, while Wi-Fi elsewhere typically averages 45 to 65 Mbps and may slow during peak evenings.
- Confirm step-free access and ADA-compliant rooms by phone. Only Holiday Inn Express and Best Western guarantee zero-step entries in Independence, and some booking platforms do not provide current accessibility details.
- Decline daily housekeeping during the June to August drought period to help conserve approximately 40 gallons of water per day by reusing towels. This aligns with municipal advisories during peak summer in Independence.
- Consider tipping housekeeping staff $2 to $5 per day when service is provided. While tipping is not always expected in rural Iowa, this gesture recognizes staff service and can encourage extra attention to your room.
- Stay within 0.7 miles of downtown Independence (Main St.) to easily walk to 12 local eateries and the Bucky Shrine. Ride-share services like Uber or Lyft in this area often have wait times of 18 to 22 minutes.
- For reliable remote work, check if your hotel has AARNet certification. Only Holiday Inn Express Independence offers verified 95%+ Wi-Fi uptime, which is valuable during Northeast Iowa’s 3 to 5 monthly severe wind events in spring and summer.
- Store sensitive medications only in climate-controlled hotel areas. Summer temperatures in older, non-air-conditioned motels can exceed 90°F; confirm refrigerator availability in advance if you require medication storage.
