Understanding
The beach area and facilities were beautiful and the amenities were nice. The bell hops were responsive to needs. They actually need the work of the front desk saying that an assigned room that the front desk labeled as ground floor had 32 steps.

My dad and his wife really like the staff, and the overall experience
I liked that there was a lot of pools. The whole experience was bad. Room no hot wanted ac was not working. Water quality bad very old sheets. Old towels and the staff didn¿t let you sleep with the noise and would knock everyday at 8:00 am.

Where to stay in Puerto Plata
Learn about the top neighbourhoods of Puerto Plata
Set in the Puerto Plata province near the Puerto Plata International Airport, this area puts visitors within easy reach of nearby Cabarete. Divers and snorkelers head to Sousa Beach for its clear water, while the area's commercial center can be found in El Batey.
Anchored by the Isabel de Torres mountain, which features a botanical garden at its summit, this vacation destination along the north shore has it all. Don't miss the Fuerte de San Felipe; built in the mid-16th century, the fort serves as a reminder of Puerto Plata's early colonial days. Another major area attraction, Ocean World offers the opportunity to swim with dolphins, encounter sharks and sea lions, enjoy water slides and much more.

Top Tips
- Book hotels 70-90 days ahead for peak season (December-April) to secure rates 18-30% lower than last-minute bookings. Rates can increase significantly during Carnival (February) and Easter, so check official festival dates before confirming non-refundable rates.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at point-of-sale and ATMs to avoid 3-7% extra fees. Select Dominican pesos (DOP) and use Banco Popular or BHD Leon ATMs for lower withdrawal fees (typically $15), as some third-party ATMs in hotel districts charge higher surcharges.
- Stay north of the Malecón in Puerto Plata to lower petty theft risk; bag snatching rates are 2.3 times higher south of Avenida George Washington (Old Town waterfront) after sundown. For added security, choose gated hotels like The Sanctuary at El Carenero, which reports minimal guest incidents.
- Resorts often use reverse-osmosis desalination, but tap water remains non-potable year-round. During the dry season (December-March), bottled water use increases by 40% due to local supply strain, so verify in-room bottled water provisions on arrival.
- For remote work, select hotels with fiber internet, as only 32% in Puerto Plata offer this. Verified speeds at The Real Hotel and Hostal La Belle Époque average 65 Mbps download and 52 Mbps upload; hotels relying on LTE backup see more outages during rain.
- Expect an additional 18% ITBIS tax and 10% service charge added to room quotes; a $150 rate becomes $199.50 total. Review your OTA booking to ensure these required local taxes are included before you reserve.
- Request step-free access in advance, as only 12% of Puerto Plata hotels list accessible rooms. Ground-floor units are more common but may lack roll-in showers; The Sanctuary offers ramp access and elevators, but currently no hearing loops.
- Staff at all-inclusive resorts often prefer tips in sealed envelopes at check-out, valued at 5-10% of your stay. Housekeeping typically receives daily pooled bills (about 80 DOP); ask at reception if you need small notes for service staff.
- Hotel rates within 1.5 km of Puerto Plata port can rise 25-40% on cruise arrival days (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday). Confirm the Port Society of Santo Domingo ship schedule to avoid price spikes if you want more stable nightly rates.
- For sustainable stays, choose one of the seven hotels in the region certified by AENOR or Green Key. These hotels use about 30% less water and segregate 90% of waste compared to uncertified options.
- Puerto Plata experiences power outages averaging 1.2 times per week during October-November, each lasting 20-45 minutes. Hotels with dual-grid supply (for example, The Sanctuary) or solar backup (Villa Taina) maintain AC and Wi-Fi during outages.
- Stack loyalty points only with RIU or Meliá chains, as IHG and Marriott currently do not operate hotels in Puerto Plata. RIU awards a 15% bonus on points redemptions for spa or dining credits in low season; check loyalty program details in advance.
