- Staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. Even helped with diet accommodations. Has shuttles to the train station, but is walking distance to both train and bus stations.
- The hotel was very nice, clean, and friendly. The staff was helpful and courteous and the room was comfortable and spacious. They offered many free snacks and foods throughout the day such as free tea, coffee, desserts, etc. The hot springs were enjoyable
- Tucked away on a quiet street in the woods with the back of the property looking out on a bamboo woods. Really nice onsen with a zen hot tub out back tucked in the woods. The three separate private onsen were lovely. The dinner and breakfast were expansive and delectable. The servers were (and staff in general) were exceedingly warm and polite.
Cons -
- Would be nice to have lotion available
- The hotel put my family of 4 into a room with 2 beds. Since we were only staying for 1 night, we didn't want to pay for another room. The hotel didn't explain that they charge per guest instead of per room until checkout. The price was more than expected.
- Weird to say but as nice as the whole place was- the carpeted stairs between floors were extremely stained, like everywhere. It was surprising and a bit off putting.

The location was beautiful! The hotel is about a 15-20 minute drive south from Hakone, convenient if you are going to spend time at Lake Ashi. It’s in a quiet wooded setting, with a Japanese garden up the hill, a waterfall and some shorter hikes from that location, a short walk down the road. Our room was comfortable and the lobby was very pleasant for sitting and drinking tea. The first come first served private outdoor onsens were very nice and we got lucky enough to use them twice. The meals were very elaborate, carefully prepared and beautifully presented.
The facilities were a little run down with stained carpets in the hallways and stairs, dated fixtures in the room, as well as rotted wood around the sink in the bathroom. We were pretty disappointed that our room did not have the unobstructed mountain view shown in every depiction of our room details when we booked. We selected the hotel over other similar options, based on this feature. When I asked the hotel staff of there was a mistake, they said the picture was “taken by a professional photographer and that not all guests can get that view.”Because I was wanted to relax and enjoy our time I didn’t complain. But the room is clearly misrepresented in the photos. If you are not booking a specific room, they should show images of various rooms with various views, like ours which was some trees and a concrete building. They did not offer to move us to a different room. We definitely enjoyed our time but it would be nice to show up with a realistic impression of what you are getting, especially for the price we payed.
I’m a solo female traveler and I booked this stay with the kaiseki dinner and breakfast. If you stay here, I recommend you do so because the food options are limited outside of the property. I had a leisure time enjoying my meal, and it was all delicious. The staff are patient and helpful. The onsen experience was also really nice. Everyone minded their own business, so it helped with being naked around others. They also have private baths available (limited). I liked that this place had two public bath options with different vibes and scenery. Each bath has an indoor and outdoor section. I appreciate all the little freebies they had too, like a snack before dinner, late night ramen, milk and ice cream outside of the baths, and basic drinks in the lobby.
It was a little bit of a walk from the bus. I landed in Gora Station after doing the Hakone loop. I took a bus to as close as I can get to the property. It wasn’t a long walk, but I was already exhausted from traveling this entire day.
The hotel was in a beautiful location surrounded by nature, and the room was clean and spacious. The included meals, dinner and breakfast, were delightful, and of course the staff were all friendly and helpful.
There were only 3 private baths on the property, so it wasn't always easy to find one that was open. However, we did manage to try all of them during our stay, and each one was fabulous. There was also a public bath available.
Staff, rooms, quiet and serene location, and baths and also dinner was awesome
I love our room with the private bath! It was super spacious and the traditional vibes was very peaceful. We also went to the open air private baths, which was also very nice and relaxing. The location wasn't too bad and we were glad we traveled with only a backpack and carry-on. They do offer luggage delivery so that was helpful for us in lightening our load as we head to our next hotel in Tokyo. Overall, I would stay here again (without the meal services).
During the sukiyaki/hot pot dinner, I felt that the staff was not welcoming/unfriendly. It could be the language barrier but we had our phones on hand to use Google translate as needed. However, we felt rushed to select what items we wanted when the menu was barely just handed to us. We also did not feel like having an alcoholic beverage that evening after a long day of travel, and we had to ask for water twice and even flagged for a different server to get water for us - our water was also never refilled throughout the meal. In addition, part of the menu also had a rice pot later in the course but it would have been nice if we had rice during the actually hot pot part of the meal. Instead, it was given towards the end of the meal with some sides. When we had the bbq dinner on our 2nd night, it was a completely opposite experience. The server was super friendly and tried to explain the meals despite the language barrier. She even asked if we wanted to have the rice (which is similar as from the sukiyaki) with our bbq instead of having it later in the course - really great service. In terms of taste, sukiyaki was our favorite, and we were trying both dinners before choosing between the two for our 3rd night dinner. But, because of the server we had for our sukiyaki dinner (we saw him again when we had bbq), we ended canceling our dinner for our third night and went out for a meal instead. We didn't like how uncomfortable we felt and did not want to end our last night on a bad note.
Newly renovated facilities, everything is at its top. Hot springs are really well designed. The young people working there are really willing to help.
Seems there is always a kid running on the floor above us even in the mid-night. The noise isolation is not that great. I hope I could sleep better.
Rooms were clean Private bath on balcony was amazingLarger private onsen were nice
Mizu no oto (the sound of water) was lovely. With multiple gorgeous private and public onsen options, various free treats throughout the day (lactobacillus drinks, coffee milk, ice cream, and noodles, among others), and renovated rooms that smell of fresh cedar, I was extremely impressed!
Nothing! Lovely stay.
Many options for an onsen, food was delicious and in large quantities, we used both restaurants on out time there and we enjoyed this experience. Room was spacious. Open air bath was a big hit. We used every day and even on day of departure we start a day with dive in
This was our first onsen stay and it was amazing. We traveled with family and the room was very spacious and comfortable. We had a chance to use both public and private baths which were amazing. The grounds are beautiful. The kaiseki dinner was an experience - the adults loved it, but it was a bit too adventurous for the kids (so just keep this in mind:) Would have loved to spend more time there and disconnect.
The private onsen.
The restaurant left a little to desire, someone dishes were not what we ordered.
The bedrooms were spacious, the property was lovely, the spa was clean and enjoyable and the staff was courteous and helpful.
The smoking room is placed next to the sauna rooms and close to the restaurant. This should be moved as it detracts from both areas.
Special onsen (outdoor hot bath) experience.
Transportation in Hakone js challenging, but not the hotel's fault.
Really amazing time, experience and room at Mizunoto. The transfer to/from the station was seamless, the moment was really great. Amenities were really on point, and it really felt like a special moment out of time in Hakone.
Honestly, almost everything was perfect. The only downside was the fact that the public baths were not open to people with tattoos (which is sometimes expected in Japan), but they only provided a maximum of two small patches per person to hide the tattoos, which clearly wasn't enough for us. But we fell back to the private bath and we were all fine. Just be aware of that.
The private lodgings were really amazing. Loved the amount of of space and outdoor private soaking tub.
The language barrier was difficult at times. Even when being welcomed to the establishment by an English speaker, there was a lot of information I felt was left out. I fully realize that I am a foreigner in Japan, it’s on me to understand the native tongue. It simply felt more difficult than other cities I had been to and I didn’t account for that. As long as you have realistic expectations and can translate on your phone. It should be fine, just be comfortable with asking additional questions.
Beautifully renovated recently, with nicely decorated rooms and comfy beds, a traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner, and public and private Onsen to choose from. It was not very busy when we visited, and we enjoyed a relaxing, peaceful experience.
We were traveling on public transport, so it requires an additional 40 minute train or bus ride from Odawara station. The instructions on using the Onsen when we arrived were not completely clear, but we soon figured it out, ( including wearing the pajamas even in the dining room for meals!)The staff were very nice but with limited English skills (and our Japanese was limited too ?)
Everything was perfect, and although it's not cheap, I feel like our one night stay was worth every penny. The room with private onsen in the terrace was beautiful, you could see the beautiful orange/red trees and hear the birds chirping. You also hear the waterfall sound all the time, it's very relaxing. Dinner and breakfast were delicious and a great way to experience traditional japanese cusine! I read a few reviews before about how it's worth waiting for the shuttle bus at the train station, but my husband and I decided to walk from the bus stop (the one after Kowakidani Station) and it was very doable! You only have to watch out for cars. The snacks offered at lobby from 6-7 were delicious, and the green tea lemonade was sooo good!
